Breaking News: First Democratic Leader Steps Up
Breaking News: First Democratic Leader Steps Up
By: John Amato on Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 at 9:38 PM - PDT
In a C&L exclusive,

A check from Hillary Clinton’s HILLPAC is being cut to Ned Lamont for five thousand dollars. She’s the first one to be counted on and make good on her promise to support the winner of the Connecticut primary. We can only hope that the rest of the Democratic Party stands behind Ned in his bid to win the Senate seat.

28. Lieberman needed the money more.
He was in a tight race.

Lamont is running against a couple of losers in the general election.

39. that was when he was in a primary battle
there isn't anything wrong with her supporting a candidate in a democratic primary. But now that said candidate has lost, she has done the right thing by contributing to the democratic nominee.

10. Not divisive. She cut a check to a Dem. It's what she's supposed to do.
It would be devisive if a Democratic leader betrayed the party and funded an independent over another Dem.

for the DEMOCRATIC Primary was somehow "hurting" the Democratic Party...

33. She gave money to Joe before
Now she's giving money to Lamont, that's crazy. I know it was before Joe lost, but it still doesn't seem right. If she was going to support Lamont, she should have done so in the first place.

41. She was always going to support the Democratic nominee.
She had her preference in the primary, he lost and she's moved on.

By the way, the guy I supported in the Colorado Senate primary lost, after which I donated $250.00 to his opponent who won the nomination. That's what parties do. They disagree during the primaries, then they get behind whomever emerges as winner.

You may want to think about taking some basic course in Government 101.

46. You really don't understand politics, then.
You can fight as hard as you want, and support anybody you want, IN THE PRIMARY.

But when the fight is over, you support the winner OF THE PARTY!

Or do we have to spell it out more S-L-O-W-L-Y for you?

49. In a democracy one got to respect the person right of choice
In the primary everyone has the right to their choice no matter how you do not like it.

The principle here is to be able to acknowledge that once the choice is make by the majority of the people. That then if the official choice.

That is her way of saying I accept the people choice.

I think important for many here at DU to realise that Lamont Victory is not about a witch hunt.
Lamont Victory should be a message to all that the people are unhappy with the direction of America.

50. But this is how a Democrat is supposed to act.
Support the candidate of your choice in the primary and support then, after the primary support the Democratic Party nominee. That's precisely how it is supposed to work. It's how I and virually every other Democrat doles out money every election cycle.

We really don't have very many RULES here at DU, y'know...
And the few we have are there for very good reasons.

That post broke a few of them, so it is gone.
That is exactly as it should be.

I just really want you to know that I MEANT it when
I apologized for picking on you.

99.9 percent of my posts here are jokes, wisecracks, or just snarky sarcastic BS,
so many DUers (quite understandably)
misinterpret the .1% of posts wherein I actually take a moment
to speak seriously from the heart.

I really _AM_ feeling REGRET for the way I have treated you, KF.

Feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk about it.

71. Welcome to politics...
...It would be a real worry if she didn't flip her support to the new winner. SOP is to attach yourself to a rising star.

I think you'll find Hil and a number of "centrist" Dems quietly edging themselves back toward the real center, and suddenly finding their voice against Bush and the Republicans. Even moreso after Lamont's victory in November (keeping fingers crossed).

35. You think Democratic office holders
don't make donations to Democratic candidates? Umm, I've got news for you. It's a regular practice. Loads of elected officials have PACs that they use to donate to candidates.

The primary is over. If the party has any decency left at all, it will get behind the nominee.

"told to straighten up and fly right." I really prefer the second definition. Lamonted shouldn't mean booted from office. I think the second Clinton cut a check to Lamont, she's already been Lamonted.

43. The General has already announced
that he would support the nominee. I don't have the link, but it was on a Kos thread a few weeks ago. He also noted the irony that Joe was planning an independent run after having accused the General of not being a Democrat.

I hope to see him in CT campaigning for Lamont.

"Senator Bayh supported Senator Lieberman in the primary because of his respect for Senator Lieberman's service and their long friendship," said Bayh spokesman Dan Pfeiffer. "The Democratic voters of Connecticut have spoken, and Senator Bayh respects their choice and will support their nominee."

All of these party wigs and hacks knew Joe was going independent if he lost the primary and he even said as much.

This Joe fella has went around for years doing whatever he could do to belittle the party while benefiting from it at the same time and these DLC types support this Joe guy to the bitter end. If anybody needs to go to back of the line it would be these DLC dunkoff's if it is all true.

REAL elections have consequences

Sorry to nitpick, but wording is important.

This is just tip money to the DC-based wealth/power center that is HILLPAC Inc.

Not that it's so bad. Just must be kept in perspective.

This shows proper respect for the decision of the voters. There's a certain air of self preservation about it, of course but whatever her motives, she is doing the right thing.
