1. I can't imagine a real democrat supporting Joe
I'm so angry I can barely see and I can't imagine any real democrat feeling otherwise, especially in CT.

Lieberman received 48% of the democratic vote. Even if he retains just a third of that in the general election, it will be enough for Lamont to be easily overwhelmed by a Republican candidate.

There's no reason Republicans would vote for Lieberman -- but they will definitely be happy that there's a spoiler in the race.

5. The Republican is polling 13 percent in a three-way race right now.
He's got an uphill battle.

19. An obscure state legislator named Schlessinger.
Apparently just a name with a face as the party had no real desire... or reason... to oppose Lieberman.

Republican Candidate Used Fake Name at Casino
14 July 2006

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Alan Schlesinger said he was simply trying to be left alone while gambling at Foxwoods Resort Casino when he got a Wampum Rewards card with a fake name.

"Schlesinger said Thursday that he got the card in the early 1990s when he played blackjack occasionally. He said dealers constantly asked him if he wanted a card and he finally broke down and got one to avoid the questions.

"…Schlesinger said he used the fake name Alan Gold to protect his privacy because the casino was controversial in the area. He said he also didn't want to receive marketing promotions from the casino by mail…"

In Connecticut, Bombshell Hits Schlesinger Campaign

The Hartford Courant sent a bunker bomb in to Connecticut Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Alan Schlesinger’s flagging campaign today with revelations that the former legislator was successfully sued for thousands of dollars in casino debts he ran up in Atlantic City venues. Schlesinger’s campaign was rocked last week by the news that, among other things, he had gambled in a Connecticut Indian casino under an assumed name, Alan Gold. His luck will have run out now.

Word of his gambling debts will renew calls for Schlesinger to abandon his tattered candidacy. His falling fortunes caused much speculation Thursday on a successor candidate in the wake of a Quinnipiac poll showing Democrat challenger Ned Lamont leading incumbent Joseph Lieberman for the first time in the August 8th primary. Fainthearted Republicans who had declined to run in the spring, when they thought Lamont a minor protest candidate, are witnessing the rare second chance in the simultaneous declines of Lieberman and Schlesinger.

The 72 member Republican State Central Committee fill vacancies in the state ticket. It is a collection of the sclerotic and highly partisan, rather than a congress of the practical.

...

Others may start exploring bids as calls grow insistent that Schlesinger walk the plank.

Interesting that the newspaper articles on this from Washington Post, Hartford Courant, and Connecticut Post are stories that are no longer available online.

30. So what's the dealie with him? Will they replace him....
... or not.

And will I get into trouble if I start an internet rumor that he's the long lost brother of the equally strange and ever-more infamous "Dr." Laura Sclessinger? ( She of radio fame)

6. The (R) had 13%- yes, that's THIRTEEN percent of the vote-
in the last three-way race I saw.

You clearly have no clue as to what you're talking about.

15. Rasmussen's last poll disagrees with you
The only person who could beat Lamont at this point is Lieberman. Their poll indicated they were both tied at 40-40.

27. Lieberman's defeat is an accomplished fact
He will lose a significant chunk of his support by refusing to acknowledge the will of the voters. The polls were taken before Lieberman got a big L tonight. Just watch.

11. The Party needs to make sure EVERY democrat realizes this
that supporting JOE now that the EXPRESSED WILL OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF CT IS CLEAR...Ned Lamont IS the nominee of OUR party. Anyone who now chooses to support Joe needs to move right along out of the party with him.

I'm done done done with this pretense. Last week they could pull the "but he's our friend" crap. Tonight it's over.

12. I'm curious how many Indys who usually vote Cons re-registered
as a Democrat so they could vote for Joe. I heard Lamont (briefly) with Matthews and Ned said that 13,000 people registered as Democrats.

That was also about the time that Matthews was asking Ned about his "insurgency" and the "Pajamahadeens" so I had to change the channel, but that's another story.

16. On the other hand,
I to D could actually bode VERY well for Lamont, as polls have shown I's are overwhelmingly against the war and don't approve of Bush's job performance.

Does anyone have any info on this?

18. Hopefully, but I'm also a little worried that a good number sat out
today knowing that Lieberman would be announcing tonight in the event of a loss to Lieberman. Those people trouble me because they'll be showing up at the polls to vote for Joe in November and as of yet, they haven't bothered to vote. They knew the second bite of the apple was coming and the only vote that counts is the November one.

22. Well...I don't think so.
Just based on my feeling about things, (or my "gut," as Colbert would say) if someone felt that passionately and wanted to see a particular person win, I think they would be compelled to get out and vote for him/her. If Joe wasn't worth voting for today, I can't see him being worth voting for in November, especially now that he's got that "loser" stigma.

But it could definitely be wishful thinking on my part. Hopefully the Lamont campaign will kick some ass between now and then.

14000 previously indi's switched. I don't know how many GOP's switched. but I also heard they can switch back tomorow to indie or GOP.

21. I agree...
He will divide the Republican Party more than the Democratic Party. However, the only question remaining will be whether he will have enough votes when he divides the two Parties and then adds the votes to his column??
