NYT:Lamont Defeats Lieberman After Tight Race
Ned Lamont, a Connecticut millionaire whose candidacy for the United States Senate soared from nowhere on a fierce antiwar message, won a narrow but decisive victory tonight over the storied incumbent, Joseph I. Lieberman, in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Mr. Lieberman conceded shortly after 11 p.m. after nearly complete results showed him trailing Mr. Lamont by nearly 4 percentage points.

With 96 percent of Connecticut’s precincts reporting, Mr. Lamont held 51.9 percent of the vote, with Mr. Lieberman holding 48.1 percent.

State officials and advisers to both candidates said Tuesday night that the Democratic primary race was too close to call, noting that voters appeared to turn out at high levels and returns were not complete. Still, some Lieberman advisers spoke grimly of defeat, though they held out hope for a boost from late returns in Hartford, New Haven, and other traditional strong-holds for the senator, who is seeking a fourth term.

6. Will this make Hillary Clinton rethink her pro-war position?
It's good to see grass-roots action having its effect, and I hope other Democratic candidates
will think hard about the issues between now and November.

BTW, how are votes counted in Connecticut? Did Lamont win in spite of Diebold, or do they have
truly free elections there?

8. Can Lamont Win
I am not trying to knock Lamont, but can he win in the general election? I am happy for Mr. Lamont, but I am just wondering if he might lose in the general election? How much support does he have statewide?

It is NOT certain that Lamont will lose. The logic from the media is that Joe running Indie will split the vote. That is not necessarily true. Let's look at the facts:

1. Most Dems, including the Democratic establishment will dissuade LIEberman from running;

2. The Dem machine understands how crucial it is to retain this seat; they will pull all resources and campaigning power into the Lamont machine. I don't think Joe can pull it off unless he accepts Repug help, which I'm certain he will.

3. CT voters proved last night that they are more politically savvy than your average Am. voter. Look, this is NOT Georgia; this is CT. There's no way in hell that Dems will allow this seat to go Repug. They will rally behind the Dem candidate. I think they will also be turned off by the fact that Joe is being a self-centered opportunist and is not doing what's best for the party.

4. Although I do believe that some Joe Faithfuls will remain loyal to him, they already voted in last night's election. I think Joe's already getting the voters he needs.

5. Finally, those voters who weren't necessarily convinced that Lamont would win and therefore voted for Joe will rethink their position now that we have a Dem. They know it's crucial for the Dem to win this thing.

I think the MSM and Repug's allow fear to cloud your judgement. I think Lamont can win.
