France is backing out of mid-east deal
Early reports are that the deal between the US and France is falling apart. Apparently the French no longer believe that there needs to be a multi-national force and instead are demanding a complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Both the US and Israel say such a demand is "unacceptable."

In other words, the UN is going to be on the sidelines on this one because the security council is deadlocked.

5. K&R ....well one can easily understand Israel's and U.S. opinion..
Getting Israel out of Lebanon, off their turf, might end the war on terrorism and save lives AND greatly disappoint friends in the defense industry!

Life doesn't mean anything to *, IMHOP.

6. this sounds like journalistic speculations... or disinfo
Haven't found any press releases yet. Chirac has an emergency meeting about Lebanon tomorrow. So why should they "announce" such a departure from the actual standpoint right now ?

Nothing on Haaretz either :

9. I suggest we all watch the Security Council
presentations to see if we understand why the French government has organized this emergency meeting tomorrow. The French are correct.

7. Not what a recent BBC report says, at all
Last Updated: Tuesday, 8 August 2006, 21:36 GMT 22:36 UK

The Arab League is making a formal bid at the UN to secure changes to a draft Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire resolution.

The delegation wants to add demands for an Israeli pullout from Lebanon. But France and the US, which thrashed out the text, do not want major changes.

A UN vote on the resolution is expected on Wednesday at the earliest.

8. I was wondering when the French would see the light.
Good for them. This was a ridiculous proposal in the first place ans sounded more like it was written by Bolton.

10. Viva le France! Get the invaders OUT of Lebanon. The invaders cannot
stay and continue to murder innocent women, children and elderly. The invaders must leave and there must be a ceasefire.

Bush and Bolton, you are such an embarrassment to Americans that want peace and do not give unconditional support to an aggressor.

And how can you speak for all Muslims, anyway? Could any single Muslim in the Middle East speak to the beliefs of all Westerners, or would doing so be a ridiculous generalization?

The US has permanent veto power. So like I said, there isn't going to be any cease-fire.
