Drs. Without Borders Form Human Chain Over Latani River to get Aid to Tyre
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 04:04 PM by leftchick
Bombing of Bridges Cuts Off Tyre From Rest of World

The southern Lebanese city of Tyre is now largely cut off from the rest of the world. All bridges out of the city have been destroyed. On Monday, Israel bombed a makeshift bridge that had been set up to cross the Litani River. Doctors Without Borders created a 200-yard-long human chain across the river in order to get aid into the city of Tyre. Aid workers standing in knee deep water passed more than three tons of medical supplies and gasoline across the river by hand. The Guardian newspaper is reporting Israel has also threatened to attack UN peacekeepers if they attempted to repair bomb-damaged bridges in southern Lebanon.

Workers from the aid organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres,or Doctors Without Borders, transfer medical supplies from a truck by hand intended for southern Lebanon across the Litani River north of the port city of Tyre, southern Lebanon, Monday, Aug. 7, 2006. The only road link that crossed the river between Tyre in south Lebanon and Sidon was destroyed by Israeli bombardment overnight, essentially sealing the city from the rest of the country. else we're going to be short a few aid workers.

4. Praises on their heads
This is a great organization -- and one I contribute to. They go places where other people fear to go. They do things that are incredibly selfless.

My doctor does "tours" with them every year, and says it has changed her life.

The Corp Media is often accused of not reporting
"Good News". Here is a chance for them to report a "Good News" event.

Yes, these folk that are risking their lives to help those in need are true hero's.

9. Because they are trying to save lives
Not destroy, kill, and gain territory.

And saving lives isn't as news worthy as the Heroic IDF dropping bombs on their Hezbollah enemies and the civilian population that supports them.<Sarcasm intended>

my boys, who are young, always fantasize about winning a million bucks and what they would buy. I always tell them the first huge chunk goes to those who have nothing and can't help themselves. They are finally getting the message at ages 9 and 11. :)

34. How do you know they are not Hezbollah agents?
How do you know that there aren't weapons in those boxes?
I'm sure Israel wouldn't bomb a makeshift brigde without good reason.

38. OMG!
Yesterday morning, the three-truck convoy traveling from Beirut to Sour (Tyre) was stuck on the north bank and supplies had to be carried by hand across the river. Another MSF team came from Sour, about 10km away, to meet the convoy on the other side of the river.

"Because the crossing is out, we had to transfer by hand, which left us very exposed," said Stokes. Four tons of supplies were moved across the river by hand over a distance of 500 meters thanks to a long human chain. A tree trunk spanning the river was used as a makeshift bridge. To speed up the process, some journalists present at the scene helped out.

"Although we had not received any security guarantees, the decision was taken to go ahead because the convoy contained medical and surgical supplies very urgently needed, especially if fighting near Sour keeps increasing," Stokes added.

"The fact that a truck was hit by an air strike close to a UN convoy during the weekend, killing two civilians, reminds us of the risks aid organizations are taking in trying to send supplies to the conflict-ridden zone. And our convoy travelling from Sour had a close escape when two explosions occurred just 100 meters away from them. Drone planes and jets could be heard all along the trip," Stokes added.

:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

Check is in the mail. Thanks for posting this and reminding me to donate.
