More BAGHDAD, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Iraq has asked the United Nations to renew its mandate in the country for another year, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"(Foreign Minister) Hoshiyar Zebari sent a message to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressing the Iraqi government's request to extend the mandate of the United Nations delegation for an additional 12 months to support Iraq," it said.

Annan recommended last week that the U.N. mandate be renewed for another year, saying the mission has been growing and expanding its reach beyond Baghdad despite security concerns.

The mandate was due to expire on Friday.

6. Fair enough,
But asking the UN to send troops and money to fix a problem the US is entirely responsible for creating does not make sense. The UN is pretty broke as it is.

7. The UN needs to come and rescue us too.
We have been taken over by PNAC/EXXON Nazis.

2. Of course they want the US to stay
Many Iraqis see them as collaborating with the enemy.
