When a Representative dies in office, a Special Election is held for a replacement. This is a competitive race with all parties allowed to field a candidate. When a Senator dies in office, the Governor hand picks a successor. The Senate is still such a Male Preserve that any female elected is still a topic of note. The Senate is a "deliberative body" with "cloakrooms" still play a part in deal making. Senators serve longer terms than any elected official in the United States. The election cycle is deliberately designed so that it is impossible to "throw the bums out" all at once. The Senate (the name itself harks back to Imperial Rome) has procedures, rules & obscure codicils cloaked in dense Latin mumbo-jumbo.
Folks, the reason there is so much animus about an actual competitive primary from the MSM & political bigwigs is that a bunch of ragtag (probably long-haired) "pajama people" have dared to question the Lifelong Annointment of a Member of the American Aristocracy's Very Own Boy's Club!
