Is the United Nations finished?
For a 40 something like me, the United Nations has always been a stable and important part of the world stage. I would never has imagined that there wold be a world without the UN. But judging by recent events, it seems to me that the future of the UN, as we know it, may be in jeopardy.

When we see the likes of a monster like John Bolton running roughshod over the institution, UN workers coming under direct attack by members of the UN, and resolutions being ignored, it is difficult to imagine that the UN can survive as a relevant organization.

Personally, I have always had a very romantic, and apparently naive, view of the UN. It is somewhat upsetting to realize that the UN will no longer mean very much, if it ever did. Further, given the imperialistic and hegemonious nature of the USA Version 2006, I cannot imagine any world body being constituted along the lines of the UN.

R.I.P. United Nations?

1. To a large degree..
.. the UN exists in name only.

I think it still does s o m e good though,
and it's important to hear its voice in these
awful days.

And though I hate to say it, and I really can't
stand Pope Benedict, it's important to hear his
voice, too...

... and that of all other religious and organizational
leaders for peace.

I joined the UNA-USA. There has been a big effort in UNA to stop Bolton's confirmation including emailing all our Senators.

3. Seems like it doesn't it?
It may take another world war to get the UN right, we're so far remived from the original mission that we've forgotten that one of the main reasons for the UN existance was to talk problems out, not pick up the gun to solve things.
I think they ought to mive the UN to somewhere else and put the US under sanction until we can prove we want to live with the rest of the world.

4. It depends
1. US
2. UN
3. Everyone else

If we support it, the UN still does what it does. Such as imposing economic sanction on countries because their leader is a dictator, even though those sanctions never touch said leader.

If the UN has the US global police unit backing it up, it has some teeth. If we want to do something that the UN doesn't agree with, we do it anyway, because there isn't anyone to stop us.

So the UN will keep on being a debating society, which isn't a bad thing. It's just not going to actually solve any problems. At the same time, neither will force(be it the US military, or economic sanctions). We'll just keep spinning around the sun, with no real destination, making shit up as we go.

10. New alliances will isolate the US. Maybe not today, but soon.
If the US obliterates the US, the new alliances will only be strengthened.

6. Yes, the US and Israel have finally finished it off. No more pretense
at having to behave like civilized super military machines. Anything goes as long as it goes US and Israel's way.
