Anyone here seen "World Trade Center" yet?
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 09:03 AM by Philosoraptor
I don't get out to movies much, and I'd be interested in your impressions if you've seen it. I hear the conservatives are giving it favorable reviews, after predicting for two years that Oliver "JFK" Stone would make some left wing wacko conspiracy theory movie blaming the U.S.

There has been one or more movies about the airliner "downed" in Pennsylvania I believe, which was also well received. Surreal when you think about it, cinema entertainments about this awful day.

Movies about that day were bound to materialize in Hollywood, and like the Titanic disaster, many more will come in the future.

Even if you haven't seen it, what do you think about it?

edit: I don't even know if its out yet.

1. I haven't seen it yet; I get chills just watching the trailer.
I used to work in the 2 WTC years back, and I don't know if I'm ready for anything that relives that day just yet. I'm torn between curiosity and trepidation.

2. i didn't think it opened until tomorrow
but maybe it's out already in certain locations?

I'm probably going to see it because my favorite actress is in it, but I'm not expecting much, since Cal Thomas is apparently a big fan of the movie.

I have a long list of favorite patriotic movies, including "Victory at Sea," "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Sands of Iwo Jima," but Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" is right up there with the best of them. It is one of the greatest pro-American, pro-family, pro-faith, pro-male, flag-waving, God Bless America films you will ever see.

--Cal Thomas

Pro-male? :eyes:

On the other hand, Maggie Gyllenhaal, the above-mentioned favorite actress, has expressed thoughts about 9/11 that are very much in line with what we see here on DU, so it's not like it's a bunch of Bushbots involved in the production.

3. No desire at all to see it
and I dread the swell of national 'pride' from those who do see it.

8. Paul Haggis is directing "Against All Enemies" from Richard Clarke's book.
It won't be quite as heavy handed as your description, but it sounds good. Haggis directed "Crash", BTW.

According to people who've read the script, though, Bush makes only an offscreen appearance.

http://www.cinematical.com/2006/03/13/haggis-is-against-all-enemies/

Haggis is Against All Enemies

Picking a project to follow up the either trite or brilliant Crash (and, since it won best picture, no one really cares about the haters, do they?), writer/director Paul Haggis has gone in an interesting direction: he's in final talks to direct Against All Enemies, an adaptation of Richard A. Clarke's condemnation of the Bush administration's handling of the threat posed by al-Qaida. Though Haggis won't be writing the screenplay himself, he's expected to "supervise" the next draft, which is in the hands of James Vanderbilt. Haggis himself is currently writing and will direct Death and Dishonor for Warner Brothers, and it's not clear which project will be made first.

Aside from its intensely political nature, what's interesting about a movie version of Clarke's memoir is its cast: George W. Bush, for example, is sort of a main character in the thing. Is Columbia actually going to hire someone to play him? What about Condoleezza Rice, and Donald Rumsfeld? While I'd be the first to admit that such a thing could work (Nixon, which is packed to the gills with portrayals of well-know politicians, is fantastic), the fact that the central figures of Clarke's book are still in the public eye complicates things. Will we, for example, be able to see a Bush on screen without giggling, and thinking immediately of SNL?

9. Don't intend to see it
because I don't respect Oliver Stone as a movie maker. I can tell from the previews that it's going to be full of feel-good crap (quite regardless of what he or anyone else believes is the real truth behind what happened that day).

I did see "United 93" and strongly recommend it to everyone.

14. I won't see it...
It has nothing to do with Oliver Stone or any reviews of it or anything...I just have no desire to see any kind of reenactment of that day....I still have never seen most of the actual news footage of that day actually...

I don't know...Maybe I'm just not ready yet but I can't stand to even listen to news stories about the film on the radio and even the promos are disturbing to me. I intend to ignore it as much as I can.
