Does anyone know how votes are tabulated in CT...
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 07:47 AM by Junkdrawer
I know CT is using lever machines in precincts, but what I want to know is how the results from the precincts are totaled across the state.

Diebold sells a program called GEMS and, yes, it can be used with lever machines.

In 2004 NY, I remember a story where some lever machines were audited and their totals found to be very different from the totals tabulated - in favor of Bush.

1. Someone here said earlier that the Nov elections will be
...tabulated using optiscan. Which is as bad as touchscreen, regardless of the paper trail.

2. Why is it as bad as touchscreen?
I mean there is a paper trail.

4. Because in order to use that paper trail
...there has to be a hand recount. And as I understand it, to get to a hand recount you first have to do a machine recount (run through the tabulators), and it has to be off by a certain percentage. As we saw in '04, they can make things tally on the machine recounts so that it never gets to a hand recount.

3. I edited my original post to be a little more clear:
What I want to know is how the results from the precincts are totaled across the state. It's important because there are some indications that, under some circumstances, the totals from the precincts are misreported in the official totals.

5. If you mean how are they tabulated
...I just had a nose around the CT election site and it appears that for the time being, part of the state's on optiscan and part still on lever machines. I had heard -- but can't confirm from what I read -- that the lever machine votes are fed into central tabulators which use the same GEMS software as the optiscan machines.

Here's the site, maybe you'll have better luck finding an answer to your question?

6. Many think that, in Ohio, Blackwell sat at a console and edited GEMS...
results. That, of course, means that the actual totals will differ from the reported totals. In Ohio's case, Blackwell then delayed a Green Party recount for months and, after the delay, there were strong indications that the 3% recount was fixed.
