Since 2000, about 40,000 troops from all branches of the military have deserted, the Pentagon says. More than half served in the Army. But the Army says numbers have decreased each year since the United States began its war on terror in Afghanistan.

Those who help war resisters say desertion is more prevalent than the military has admitted.

3. What an awful, untenable position to be placed in...

...risk one's life fighting in support of an immoral and illegal invasion/occupation, or desert---if I had a son or daughter caught up in such a mess as this Neocon driven debacle in Iraq, I would reluctantly encourage desertion if there was no other legitimate way to get out. Complicity with war crimes and other crimes against humanity is too much to ask.

Now all we need is for people to stop signing up. If they don't have anybody to fight the war they will have no choice but to end it. I don't see them resorting to a draft--then even the Rethugs will protest. They don't want their precious selves and children going off to be traumatized and/or die.
