Breaking : Bush cautions on Lebanon cease-fire
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
10 minutes ago

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush said Monday any Mideast cease-fire must prevent Hezbollah from strengthening its grip in southern Lebanon, asserting "it's time to address root causes of problems."

Bush urged the United Nations to work quickly to approve a resolution to stop hostilities that have been raging between Israel and Hezbollah for more than three weeks and killing hundreds.

.................................................

Bush indicated he wants Israel to stay until an international force is deployed that can assist Lebanon in taking over control of the southern part of the country, where Hezbollah's operations are based.

"Whatever happens in the U.N., we must not create a vacuum into which Hezbollah and its sponsors are able to move more weapons," Bush said in a joint news conference with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. "Sometimes the world likes to take the easy route in order to solve a problem. Our view is, it's time to address root causes of problems. And to create a vacuum is unacceptable."

1. root causes of problems? - root causes of problems?
Who live on the land for centuries and who live on the land for less than 60 years?

4. Just making observations _ don't call for anyones destruction
All the ancient tribes who make up the countries of the Mid East all say that as long as Israel exists on the land it occupies now, they will not rest.

But todays world is so insistent on Israel being there to fulfill biblical prophecies.

5. Leaving aside any attempt to understand the morality of the situation,
calling for Israel to be dismantled unfortunately wouldn't help solve the problem, since the Jewish Israelis can never accept that.

I myself believe a moral case can be made for Israel: there should be a permanent refuge for Jews, a refuge they can defend, a refuge on their original homeland. (The legal case for Israel rests on the UN partition of Palestine in 1948.) But alas, the original Palestinian Arab inhabitants of the territory never consented to large scale Jewish immigration (already underway by 1900) or the founding of a Jewish state. And so Israel has been in a state of war for more or less its entire existence.

At this late date, I think the only possible solution is a two-state solution (Israel in its original borders), with suitable compensation for displaced Palestinians and their descendents. I am positive that this will eventually happen. It came close in 1994 and in 2000, but intransigence on both sides (Sharon and Arafat) prevented it. When peace comes, the entire region will prosper and amity will prevail. Not for some time though.
