And another email from the Coalition on Human Needs (http://www.chn.org)...

THANK YOUR SENATORS FOR PRESERVING THE ESTATE TAX

Call toll-free: 800-459-1887 (toll-free number available through Wednesday, August 9)
To thank your Senators who voted NO last Thursday on the procedural vote on H.R. 5970, which would have slashed the estate tax by $750 billion over 10 years. Tell them:

Thank you for voting NO on H.R. 5790, the cynical ploy to slash the estate tax. Please continue to fight for a vote on a clean minimum wage. America’s lowest-income working families who have not had an increase in their wages since 1997 are long overdue for a raise.

To see how your Senators voted go to: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00229

Look for more details in our Human Needs Report coming today.

The toll-free number is provided courtesy of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization whose work for social justice, peace, and humanitarian service includes campaigns for a moral budget and a fair minimum wage (www.afsc.org/economic-justice/). AFSC welcomes groups to circulate and use the toll-free number in support of non-partisan budget goals and without linking the alert to a website soliciting donations or actions which may be used to support partisan lobbying or work.

4. When I called my Senators, in addition to thanking them, I asked...
Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 07:22 PM by Sapphire Blue
... that they vote against the estate tax cut if/when Frist brings it forward again.

I also commented that I am greatly concerned w/the steadily increasing poverty in this country since bush took office & asked if my Senators would introduce/sponsor legislation to reverse all the hideous repub tax cuts for the rich, restore/increase funding for all of the social programs that they slashed and increase the minimum wage to a livable amount... that, imo, would be a Trifecta for we, the people.

6. Both Senators' offices seemed surprised (& delighted) to receive Thank You
... calls. I may have to call the rest of the Senators who voted 'nay'... except for Frist, that is... then again, I might call Frist, but w/a different message  .

3. Hurrah for improvements in WIC packages!
How in the world can we expect parents to parent well and children to grow healthy when they haven't the necessary GOOD nutrition to do so??

I'm so appalled at the type of foods that are given to hungry people, but especially to pregnant women and small children.

Is it really possible that there are those in decision-making positions who aren't aware of gestational diabetes?? Just for an example.

I hope there is a HUGE improvement!

Thanks for the news on this!
