1. An earlier report from less than an hour ago also said
Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 01:51 PM by Skidmore
that Israel issued a warning to some area of Lebanon to be off the streets by a certain time or be targets. I don't know if this was the same area, but if it is, this is terrible. Does anyone else know?

Edited to include this link per poster #11 containing further details on this attack which were not available at the time of my original post:

2. They're describing it on CNN
it's the road that separates old Christian Beirut from Shias where people felt safer.

5. Apparently, not the same area as the one that has a warning
issued to it, but this is still terrible. To tell people to stay inside or become targets does not mean that they are safer. When a rocket or a bomb hits a house, you risk also being crushed in debris or hit with schrapnel. This is pure public relations BS to provide some cover for striking civilians.

I feel ill.

7. Breathe in Lebanon and you're a target
"Leave this area" or you're a target. Get off the streets at certain times or you're a target. Try using the roads or escape routes and you're a target. Try using a boat and you're a target. They've bombed the roads, bridges, airports and are blocking the ports. Um... just how the hell are these folks supposed to escape being targets?

8. I wish I knew.
The policies that contribute to this will only be tolerated by the world for so long. The US and Israel have pushed the envelope about as far as it can go, I fear, without significant retribution of some sort. The longer this goes on puts the whole world at jeopardy. I hope someone with some sanity can get in to the middle of this and put a stop to it. I know at this point it won't be the US. I don't know who anymore is positioned to make a difference.

3. this is just sickening
there are not only factions out there, there are plenty of Christians out in Beirut too, hopefully they got out, alot of Christian Armenians out there. We were slaughtered once we do not need to be slaughtered again, along with our Lebanese cousins.

6. Baiting Hezbollah to attack Tel Aviv...
and, thereby, give Israel an excuse for total, regional war.

So far, Hezbollah has not taken the bait.

The Arab League unite things are real shitty.
They coming to the UN and they call the Resolution totally one sided.

They always fight among themself.
And now they are presenting a unified front.

It does not look good.

given the new guidelines.

An Israeli strike hit a south Beirut street on the edge of the city's mostly Christian eastern district Monday evening, killing five people and wounding 24, security sources said.

The strike hit a building near a mosque in the upscale southern suburb of Shiyah, officials with the security forces told CNN.

Video of the scene, aired on Lebanese TV, showed rescuers attempting to dig for survivors amid the rubble of the collapsed building.

The strike came shortly after Israel warned residents south of Lebanon's Litani River to stay off roads after 10 p.m., Israeli military sources said.

Note this happened before 10pm Lebanese time.
