Joe Lieberman Loss Equals President Al Gore?
http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_27267526.shtml

Joe Lieberman is set to lose his primary election for his US Senate seat on Tuesday. The moderate Democrat is not liberal enough for the Democratic Party in the dark blue state of Connecticut.

They want an anti-war liberal and they feel they have that in Ned Lamont.

James Joyner points out that some are so giddy they believe that a loss in the primaries for Lieberman will move the part on the offensive and they will run on an anti-war, anti-Bush platform by looking at the front page of Sunday's Washington Post.

Dan Balz of the Post takes the long way, but suggests that Lieberman losing the primary could excite interest in a comeback by former vice president Al Gore. While that seems quite the stretch Balz make his case.

***

As a result, a loss on Tuesday could generate more demand for a strongly anti-Bush, antiwar candidate in the Democratic primaries. Several are ready to run, including Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.), former senator John Edwards (N.C.) and Sen. Russell Feingold (Wis.), the only one of the three to vote against the war in 2002.

None, however, may be as attractive to the grass-roots activists as Gore. He has said he cannot conceive of circumstances that would put him in the race. But he may be coaxed to reconsider if the sentiment for him grows after the November midterm elections.

But I don't think she will.

2. As far as I can see Hill is out.
Maybe VP, but I really doubt even that. Maybe a high profile cabinet post IF we go dem in `08.

4. Joe is going to come back and win.
Today's poll shows that he leads among voters making less than $50 k and is gaining even more among that group. That is the largest voting block in CT.

5. Please do not make the mistake
of assuming a Democrat will win the presidency in 2008. No matter who that candidate is. I know lots of good people here support lots of good potential candidates. DO NOT for one minute think that BushCo will readily give up power. And don't think in terms of brother Jeb, either. They will go through a fairly normal primary season, but whoever comes out the candidate will be someone who is ideologically committed to keeping us in Iraq, to continuing the Republican Agenda everywhere.

Each and every one of us needs to be committed to bringing Democracy back to this country, and the only way to do that is to work to elect Democrats at all levels, maybe even run for office ourselves. And, if necessary, have street protests against stolen elections.

None of this means I'm opposed to an Al Gore candidacy (although I keep on being amazed at how many somehow don't hear or believe his statements that he won't run). I just think it is far, far too early to be worried about who will be the candidate in 08, when that election is more than two years away.

6. All that is dependent on the Republicans retaining control of Congress

If the Democrats win back control of both houses all bets are off. I would say there is a good possibility that we may have a Democratic president before 2008 if we play our cards right.

9. Quite frankly
there is no reason to think that Dems will win control of either house. There's this assumption out there that they will, because, after all, people are so fed up with the Republicans.

In 2004 W had a slightly below 50% approval rating. Over and over again we heard of people who said they'd voted for him in 2000, but by God weren't going to vote for him now. And we NEVER heard of anyone who'd voted for Gore in 2000 but who now believed W was the right one to vote for. And what happened? Either W actually won in a free, fair, and honest election, or they stole it.

Personally, I think it's the latter. You need to keep on thinking about specific races in recent years, and noting how the unexpected winner was the Republican. Over and over again.

I'd be extremely surprised if Democrats actually win seats this November. Even more surprised if we elect a president in 2008. For one thing, it will not be a known Democrat against an amorphous Republican, but a specific Democrat with all his (or her) flaws and negatives up against a specific Republican who will be shown as the Saviour of America, the only choice to Stand Firm against our Enemies. They are masters at controlling the dialog. Too many Democrats currently in power went along with the war to effectively stand up against them now.

It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
