Dammit, Condoleeza....Let Cubans decide what they want
I'm not big fan of Castro, but I also recoignize that like most things, he's been a mixed bag for Cuba. I think has been too heavy handed and monomaniacal over the years. But his regime has also done good things for Cubans, especially in contrast to the crooks that previously were in charge there.

But the real point is that the US has no business deciding for Cubans how they handle the inevitable transition that will come as Castro ages and at some point passes into the large collective in the sky.

Listening to Condoleeza Rice on the talk shows made it sickenly clear that the Neo-Cons have big plans for Cuba. They will provide the Cuban people with the "tools" to make a transition to a Jeffersonian democracy....Where have we heard that before? Iraq anyone?

While Cuba struggles what to do next, the bottom line is that it shgould be up to Cubans to decide what happens. If they choose to allow Castro's regime to maintain power beyond his personal rule, so be it. If they choose to have an eastern European style "velvet Revolution" to change the government, that's their choice. If they choose the path of civil war and violence, then the world community should intervene on humanitarian grounds -- BUT it should be an international effort with the world serving as honest broker.

Regardless of how it shakes out, though, the Neocons (and their imitators in the bi-partisan mainstream establishment) in the US should not be allowed to try and impose ourselves on them.

The last thing Cuba needs is the kind of "help" we gave to Iraq.

1. The good news is everyone in Cuba is aware of the Bush Plan
It's been talked about and discussed for over a year now. And even those who oppose Castro in Cuba want no part of US intervention.
