Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines on Mel Gibson
Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines on Mel Gibson

"I'd like to send this one out to Mel Gibson," Maines said, just before the group sparked up "White Trash Wedding," a sardonic hoe-down from 2002. "I guess all our controversy would've blown over by now if I had just checked into rehab and said I was drunk and didn't know what I was saying."

2. Interestingly, I tried to find a Dixie Chicks cd in....
... Target last week and there was not a one to be found.

There still categorized as "Country" , right? The rest of 'em were there; at least all the Country artists that I ever heard of.

13. Good idea. Thanks. And I was wondering if ....
their absence from the shelves at Target had anything to do with the boycott of their work.

3. Classless
Alcoholism isn't something I would choose to ridicule to make myself look better.

6. Thats fine.
She can undoubtedly stand up for herself.

I just think its classless and does nobody any good for her to make such a classless statement.

11. I stand with you Lerkfish
I agree completely. This statement was direct and to the point. He needs to have responsibility for what he said.

I think they are classy ladies.

8. That wasn't then point of her remark
She wasn't making fun of alcohilsm... she was talking about personal responsibility, and standing up for your beliefs... even if unpopular.

16. She wasn't making fun of alcoholism, she was making fun
of those who accept his excuse for his hateful remarks.

Two girls that were with him that night said he didn't appear drunk or belligerent before the incident. They said he was drinking water. The women don't see how he could have gotten as drunk as they say he was in the ten minutes between when he left and when he was pulled over.

17. Actually, she has more class (and guts) than any public figure out there.
Mel is the one who's classless, blaming his tirade on the drink. He can't just apologize for what he said, he has to blame something. What happened to responsibility and "ownership"? Oops, only the Democrats are responsible for themselves and their actions, the Republicans can blame others.

18. Using "alcoholism" as an excuse is far more tacky
and I think that's what she was pointing out - he won't accept the blame, first everything is the "Jews" fault and then its the fault of alcohol. Mel just needs to stand up and be a grown up and admit he's a bigot and it's wrong!

21. you missed the point
she was commenting on public opinion, and how to manipulate it.She wasn't saying anything about alcoholism, per se. She is appropriate to ridicule Mr (holy) Gibson.

22. So if I had some other disease and used it as an excuse to spew racist
bullshit, it would be classless to call me on it? Give me a break. Alcohol makes you say and do stupid things that you might otherwise not say or do, but it doesn't plant the ideas in your head in the first place. And while I'm sympathetic to it as a disease, it doesn't excuse the racism. The only diseases I can think of that might excuse a person from the things they say are Tourette's Syndrome and severe mental illness.

5. Mel has drunk the cool-aid; therefore cannot do any wrong
& must be forgiven. Course had this been Moore, Gore....

Also, where was all that forgiveness for Kennedy. Jay Leno still making jokes about him.

9. Speaking of Natalie and the Chicks, the Greensboro
concert was cancelled (and thus my birthday plans). No explanation has been given and I checked their tour dates and it appears most of the US dates are disappearing and foreign dates are being put their place. Anyone know what's going on? More death threats?

19. this is posted in their website - dates are moved, not cancelled
August 3, 2006
Tour Updates

AEG Live has just announced some changes to the routing of the Dixie Chicks’ “Accidents & Accusations” tour which are now reflected on the Tour Page. There are still the same number of North American tour dates as originally announced, but some of the late summer/early fall dates have been moved to later in the fall, and a few dates have been cancelled. Dates not yet on sale should go on sale in September. Tickets purchased for shows that have been moved to a later date will be good on the new show date. Ticket holders for any shows no longer on the itinerary should contact their original point of purchase for refunds and information on other Dixie Chicks concerts in the region.
