Lebanon is Turning Into a Massive Environmental Disaster
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 08:09 PM by JCMach1
In addition to the human cost, many nations and the whole Med. will be affected by this oil spill...

Spreading oil slick threatens neighbouring nations

Financial Times

London: An oil slick affecting more than 80km of the Lebanese coastline has reached Syria and could threaten Cyprus, Turkey and Greece if left unchecked.

The spill was caused by the bombing of the Jiyyeh power station, 30km south of Beirut, on July 13 and 15. The oil has been spreading widely because it has so far been impossible to begin cleaning it up while the Israeli attack on the country continues... http://www.gulfnews.com/region/Lebanon/10057888.html

1. Every nation affected by the Med spill should sue Israel for damages
and put some kind of sanctions on them. But in the end, Israel will be affected too.

7. I agree. Israel should be held to pay for the damages it caused.

2. Take a country the area of Lebanon with 3.8 million people, kill 90%
...of them and who needs an environment :sarcasm:

4. I finally seen a report on US TV of this oil slick.
IIRC it was on ABC evening news this pm.

As a man interviewed said, 'if it wasn't for the war, this would be the biggest story going right now'...

They said the spill is nearly as large as the Exxon Valdez spill...

12. About time
this made MSM. War crimes (1,000 dead Lebanese), environmental crimes, the destruction of a country and they want my support. This is the quintessence of evil.

5. Some Perspective on the Scope of the Disaster
...Initial reports indicated that ten thousand tonnes of heavy fuel oil had escaped from the damaged tanks, but the eventual total could be as much as 35,000 thousand tonnes.

Spillage from the Exxon Valdez incident in Alaska in 1989 totalled just under 40,000 tonnes and led to widespread ecological damage.

Local ecologists say the oil is especially threatening for spawning fish and sea turtles, including the endangered green turtle.

9. Not to mention...
...that, long after this conflict is over, the Lebanese economy will be in ruins. A large part of its commerce lay in tourism, with the beaches as one of the main attractions. Now, every single beach in Lebanon lies under a coating of oil, and even the most massive clean-up will be too late. Those beaches will be stained for decades. No beaches -- no tourists. No tourists -- a destroyed economy.

But it shouldn't matter. After all, they're only nigg...I mean Ay-rabs, right? :grr:

10. I wonder if anyone will bring up the ENMOD treaty?
The convention on "hostile modification of the environment" -- which was signed years ago, and discussed in the context of the first Iraq War (making Saddam liable for those burning oil wells and the spills in the Gulf).

14. Why is the Democratic misLeadership silent? or worse, supportive
of this crime?

with the exception of a handful in the House (Kucinich, Barbara Lee, a few others) the entire Democratic leadership supports this brutal attack on Lebanon (or refuses to say anything to even question it).
Why such cowards (or worse).

That's why i am supporting Todd Chretien for U.S. Senate here in California, running against Dianne Feinstein (and a still unknown Republican, who is really trailing Dianne by a whopping margin). We need to send a message that progressives want a decent foreign policy, not one that mimics the Republicans. It may not be possible for Todd to win now, but we can get our message a big boost.
