Eskimos buying air conditioners. Mayor says it's been getting hot lately
http://www.slate.com/id/2147167

<snip>The hotter it gets, the more energy we burn. In 1981, only one in three American households with central air used it all summer long. By 1997, more than half did. Countries once cooled by outdoor air now cool themselves. In Britain, 75 percent of new cars have air conditioning. In Canada, energy consumption for residential cooling has doubled in 10 years, and half the homes now have central or window units. Kuujjuaq, an Eskimo village 1,000 miles north of Montreal, just bought 10 air conditioners. According to the mayor, it's been getting hot lately.

8. I can proudly say that I don't use my car's air conditioning except
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 09:19 PM by 1monster
and unless it is raining hard enough that I can't keep my car windows down even a little bit.

I didn't do much driving during the month of June and I only had to put %27.52 worth of gasoline in the tank for the whole month.

The first two weeks of July, my husband started using my car to run errands because his car is a gas guzzler (and he always has the air on in it). He used the air conditioning in my car and I had to put $23.00 of gas in it the first week.

Needles to say, I wasn't very pleased and told him that if he was going to drive my car, he wasn't to use the AC.

He started driving his own car again...

9. Actually, it burns less gas to use the air as opposed to the windows down
With the windows down, the car "drags" and is not fuel efficient.

11. Not according to my gasoline bills. I drive a 1990 Astro Van and get
about 26 miles to the gallon in city driving. I don't take it out on to the highway because it is so old and I don't wanna have a break down in the middle of an Interstate.

12. That's not quite true
The American TV show Mythbusters tested this using identical cars with the same amount of fuel. It found that at speeds up to 80 km/h it was more efficient to leave the windows open, and at higher speeds it was better to use air conditioning.

http://www.newscientist.com/backpage.ns?id=mg18925432.200

So if you're on the highway going 55 or faster for a long stretch of time, it's better to use the A/C, if you're in town and going slower it's better to roll down your windows.

Though it really depends on your car more than anything. Each car is different. More aerodynamic ones, are much better with the windows down, less aerodynamic ones, starts getting better with the A/C on.

It's not cut and dry.

10. the CBC news said that the Nunavut gov't buildings are planning for AC
They haven't needed air conditioning before, but the increase in warm days (and the fact that keeping the windows open all the time when it gets hot will let in a lot of dust, which damages the computers etc.) has led to this proposal.
