I finally saw "V for Vendetta" last night...
There's no good movie theaters around here--at least none that produce a better size/comfort ratio than my 52" projection TV. So I wait to see movies when they come out on DVD. I've been looking forward to V for Vendetta after all the good things I heard about it, and it finally came out last Tuesday. Managed to get the last copy off the four-shelf display area for it in the local video store--not a small store, either.

Hot damn. Every bit as good as I could have hoped it would be. The writing, the acting, the direction, the production, the whole damn thing rocked. It's got an incredible amount of tie-in with everything that's going on right now, but it's also timeless, in the way that 1984 is still applicable today. Fear, freedom, hope, manipulation, tyranny, symbolism, demagoguery, choice, integrity, sacrifice. Even having read the graphic novel it was based on (I hunted down a copy when the movie first came out, to see what the fuss was about) didn't hurt it; the film is considerably updated and even better than the original, I think. Definitely what I would call a must-see.

2. Me too!
Was finally able to watch it last night. I didn't know what to expect, but WOW, it was great. I couldn't help think that if things keep going the way they are now, that could be all of us in the future. I must admit it made me though, it gave me hope.

3. I bought the DVD

when it came out and have watched it three times since. I saw it in the theatre when it came out. Hugo Weaving's performance is genius. It's amazing how much he conveys using only vocal intonation and body language. I don't usually buy DVDs but I couldn't wait to get this one for a number of reasons. I'll be watching this one for years to come.

V's broadcast from the BTN captured the very reason why people choose security over freedom. It should be required viewing all classes which teach the Constitution.

5. Thanks for your thoughts! Friends have been touting it, and are bringing
a DVD up to my rural outpost on a visit. I'm glad to hear their opinion seconded.

6. No theaters here, either, just got the DVD
And I did love it. The acting was supurb, the visuals wonderful, and there's just something about a woman with a buzzcut that gets my testosterone production going... ;)

However, as great as I found the movie, I came away wishing there had been... more. I can't really place it. The bad guys weren't all that interesting - Just your generic "evil politician" bad. You didn't really get a good understanding of that V is struggling against. It seems every citizen in the movie already dislikes the government - there are no flag-waving partisan backwash-types to act as a foil. And the ending seems rather muted, somehow.

I also think the movie could have done without the "super ultra pirate ninja" aspect of the lead character. I don't mind action, it just seemed out of place.

Excellent movie overall, but it seemed very pale compared to my expectations. Ah well :)
