U.S. threatens suit if Maine probes Verizon ties to NSA

The Bush administration is threatening to sue if Maine regulators decide to investigate whether Verizon Communications illegally turned over customer information to the National Security Agency.

Verizon customers in Maine have asked the state's Public Utilities Commission to investigate whether the telecom giant violated privacy laws by cooperating with a domestic surveillance program. The PUC is expected to decide Monday whether to open such a probe.

In a July 28 letter to the PUC, the U.S. Department of Justice cites national security as a key reason for its opposition to a state investigation. The seven-page letter suggests a lawsuit is likely if Maine regulators decide to investigate.

"We sincerely hope that, in light of governing law and the national security concerns implicated by the requests for information, you will decline to open an investigation and close these proceedings, thereby avoiding litigation over the matter," the letter reads.

1. Sue away, BushCo... let's drag everything into the light of day
and watch you try and slither back under the rock from whence you crawled.

2. You big silly!
They only hate the trial lawyers that work for OTHER people.

I live in Maine and have always been proud of the sensible approach to politics that most people here attempt to maintain, and their unwillingness to swallow bullshit.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed until Monday and hoping that Maine will continue to make me proud.

3. 911 911 911 911 911 911 911 oh yeah and national security...
So...they care about 'national security' do they? Is that why they left NOLA, one of Americas biggest port cities completely vulnerable for over a year now?

What a pathetic joke Bush and crew are. Yeah, sue away like you did in Bush vs Gore. Look where that got us! Fucking losers.

4. The pathetic joke is on the American people, generally a most deserving
lot for they have failed collectively in their civic duty in numbers too huge to fathom to demand: accountability, fiscal responsibility, openness, fairness, and protection of the environment; adherence to the rule of law, international law and treaties, the Geneva conventions, the Bill of Rights and other provisions of the Constitution; the reasoning and rationale for a pre-emptive war deemed by much of the world as illegal, unnecessary, immoral, unjust, and inhumane.
