Deputies Solve Mass Egging

TAMPA - It took some hard-boiled detective work to crack the Westchase Independence Day Egg Caper.

Nearly 300 eggs had been hurled, targeting dozens of homes and vehicles, Hillsborough County sheriff's Sgt. Carlos Collado said. The malicious egg toss occurred between 3 and 7 a.m. on July 4, he said.

Here's how the mystery was unscrambled:

A deputy, by chance, walked into a 7-Eleven convenience store on Sheldon Road the morning after the attacks and noticed all the eggs were gone. He asked who bought the eggs, and the clerk said some teens came in the night before and cleaned out the cooler. That was the first clue of who hatched this fowl plot.

At the scene of one of the egg tosses, a carton was found. It was a brand sold only at Wal-Mart, Collado said, so detectives went to the nearby Wal-Mart and looked at surveillance videos. The videos from the convenience store and Wal-Mart showed the same teens making the egg buys.
