WASHINGTON

The grocery shopping list for the far-reaching Women, Infants and Children program is getting its first significant update since the Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are being added to the program, which helps feed more than half the babies born in the U.S. To cover the cost, WIC will pay for less of the juice, eggs, cheese and milk that have been staples of the program.

The changes to the low-income nutrition program were proposed Friday and will be finalized next year. Anti-hunger groups are enthusiastic about the additions.

"Overall, we're really happy about this food package. We think, for WIC clients, this is going to make a huge difference," said Geri Henchy, director of early childhood nutrition at the Food Research and Action Center.

2. Interesting. They are moving away from a commodities support based
model to one that is geared more to general nutrition.
WIC is a shining star among Federal food assistance programs and it's great to see these adaptations.

4. This is fabulous, but I'm suspicious.
Repukes never do anything unless it's in their own best interest.

5. Half the babies born in this country are to low income women?
What is wrong with this picture. Good thing the economy is in such great shape. Of course the repubs have been at war against women's right for decades - except the right to have children who are needed for the eternal wars we are going to have.

6. Finally!
Those of us who have been pushing for this for years are ecstatic to see this movement toward TOTAL nutrition in the WIC programs.

11. They should never have taken them off to begin with.
Plus, there's more they can reinstate. They have no qualms about hurting poor women and their children while claiming to serve Jesus with a smile. They create a special Hell for themselves.
