Internal arguments
There are lots of arguments here at DU for which a portion of the membership seems to look for instances of a certain kind of behavior and then comes in and tries to whup everyone else's ass about it. Lately, it's been the LONG-STANDING joke of Ann Coulter being very manly looking and possibly a transgender.

People, listen: stop arguing about this shit. Some people are very sensitive to the subject, and others aren't. If we continue to fight among ourselves for what has become a DEAD HORSE, we are not getting anywhere.

If there is a thread with which you disagree, HIDE IT. Use your GD IGNORE button--that's what it's for. Reasoned discussion is one thing, but if you can't stand the heat stay the hell out of the kitchen!!!!

It's NOT GOING to change. Ever heard the saying, "I don't agree with you, but I will defend to my death your right to say it"? That's what free speech is all about, and one of the best things about forums like DU is people telling other people why something they talk about is wrong from another perspective.

I have to admit: I have my own prejudices--we ALL do. And we ALL have misconceptions of the reality of other people's lives. We talk a big game here, saying we all want free speech, but some people close down their minds when it is actually in front of them. It's natural, and it's real. But sometimes we have to bite our tongues and let people rant, because ultimately, if you reason with them instead of reacting with anger, they might respond positively. Anyone who argues, for instance, that we have no empathy for transgenders should realize that attacking those people is definitely NOT going to change their minds, but make them think that you're an asshole for being so argumentative about the subject, and confirm their view of the whole subject entirely.

As I said, I have my own prejudices. The major one is the RRR, and thankfully, many--most--DUers feel much of the same contempt I hold for that group. But let's face it, even they have a right to live their lives in spite of their narrow-mindedness, and as long as they don't try to convert me, I can happily ignore SOME of their unwholesomeness.

So stop arguing!! If you want to discuss the subject, don't rant and rave about it. Start a thread without any anger, and talk about the topic with softer tones. You actually might win more allies than antagonists if you talk with a more reasonable attitude.
