20. I am not transgendered and I think there needs to be more info on
this subject and the sensativities...cause I cannot find an insult to the transgendered here..I only mentioned Mussad..cause they are reight wing..and they are hitting all the websites who are against the Israel invasion..but I cannot for the life of me understand...WHY calling Ann (the Man) Coulter is insulting to transgendered..unless it is like saying...she is thin insults all thin women?

I think it's just that it's so easy to throw it at coultergeist... that people just don't step back and recognize that those kinds of statements are genuinely hurtful to people who have enough on their plate without having to bite their tongues in the company of "friends".

to do with GOP hypocrisy in general. The old "saying one thing and doing another" theme that Republicans manage so well. And they excel at hypocrisy when it comes to matters of sexuality, it seems.

It would be just like Coulter to be transgendered or intersex or whatever the term of art is nowadays, but deny it, and at the same time, enthusiastically seek to crush the rights of people who are just like her, but without connections to power.

You see the same thing going on with these GOP legislators and executive branch types who are hiding in the closets, cheerfully denying rights to folks just like them (but more honest about themselves) without a shred of dissonance about it.

And then there's the guys who point the finger at people who fool around on their wives with, say, interns, but have played Hyde the Salami with a mistress for eons.

Anyway, I've always thought that was where the root of the annoyance with her was. Not that being transgendered is "bad" but lying about it and claiming some sort of moral superiority is what bugs people.

Although I may be wrong, maybe some people are just having a lousy joke. But I always took it as people slapping her because she's being less than truthful about her own personal challenges and development while claiming to be some sort of 'nature-made' feminine role model.

The simple fact is .. well she's about as appealing as a pile of poo. Shes mean and spiteful, she hates people and she enjoys causing other people pain.

So to push back, people poke at the more obvious thing about Ann, the big question.

I have no problem with Transgendered, Gay, lesbians or bis, as a whole or even individually, I think your all lovely and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect of human beings.

BUT

Ann is an alien, she incites anger based on the hate she spews. Does it mean its fair to transgendered community that others equated her to "dan" Probably not, but it's on the same token as Bush

You think monkeys are happy that Bush is being called a chimp? I can assure they are pissed as hell over it!

In other words we all have to fight the prejudices of the world, those who are black, white, jewish, gay, Democrats,republicans,christians everyone feels persecuted, because everyone is being persecuted in some fashion.

Question is How do move above that?

If we made comments about Mel Gibson really being JEW because he had a BIG JEW NOSE and was REALLY REALLY CHEAP LIKE A JEW, and then said that we were merely pointing out HIS hypocrisy because he obviously doesn't like himself and his own Jewishness; I think it would be very clear who the hypocrites are. Mel Gibson is not a hypocrite. He's an antisemite (or so it seems). By disparaging Jews in order to "zing" an antisemite, we're the ones who would be the hypocrites.

Yes I'm sick of Republican hypocrisy, too. But this has nothing to do with Republican hypocrisy. This has to do with a bad childish liberal name-calling joke that slams a portion of our base in order to make up lies that we think might hurt a fascist.

Ann Coulter is not a hypocrite; she's a fascist.

I really don't know the answer one way or another. But she has the LARGEST hands and feet I've seen on a female, and she has an ENORMOUS adam's apple. It's HUGE. It bobs up and down like Ichabod Crane's.

My first thought, the first time I ever saw her on TV, was that she'd had some medical intervention and was once male. HOnestly. That's the first thing that crossed my mind, before I ever heard her speak.

OF course, it would serve Mel right if he found out he was related to Madeleine Albright. It would be even better if the news got broken first to his hideous daddy, if the bum still lives.

I didn't save them, but I'm sure someone will repost them.

She was definitely a female born and bodied child and teenager with a softer physique and obvious breasts. She presented as completely and unproblematically female at least until college. It is most likely that Ann Coulter is anorexic. Her feet and hands are large because she is very tall. Her skin is hardened looking because she is a very skinny woman approaching middle age and very skinny women can get more masculine looking as they get older.

She doesn't strike me as trans at all. She does strike me as anorexic. Oh, and also as a despicable and pathetic fascist.

A transgendered person is a person who stands out because he or she does not reflect the social norms of his/her assigned birth sex and usually adopts the characteristics of the "other" sex.

An intersexed person is genetically not male or female. They may have Turner's Syndrome or be full hemaphrodites or one of the dozen other intersexed conditions. They may be born with the genitals of a female but the secondary sex characteristics of a male (full beard, mustache, balding). They may be born with two sets of genitalia, hypospadias (an invagination of the penis)... the list goes on.

It's not about political fashion, it's the medical terms.

And one does have to watch it, because people get offended, even though I am a "live and let live" type.

Some intersex people don't want to change at all, either, which adds another dynamic to the list.

I don't think either condition is political. But for those of us who haven't had a load of exposure to these situations, it's like walking a tightrope to be sure not to say the wrong thing.

Some transgendered people don't want to change either-- meaning they don't feel the need to have surgery to align the narratives of their gender preference with their physical type. :) Flaunt it if you got it.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you at all, I'm just trying to educate you about the facts of the matter. Transgendered is the umbrella term and transsexual is the specific term for people who have undergone SRS. Transgendered people are often very poor because they have no job opportunities, especially MtF (male to females) of color. Yes there are white middle-aged MTFs, and they usually get the media airtime, but there are thousands upon thousands of MtFs living in extremely violence and abusive conditions.

The old joke about "tranny hookers", well, why do you think a good portion of them are hookers? Because they enjoy it? The reality is that it is one of the only ways that an impoverished MtF can afford surgery. (Not all the poor Black teenaged transwomen can be stockbrokers.) In fact, many MtFs drop out of school facing extraordinary discrimination. They face the discrimination and the "pink collar" market.

On the other hand, MANY transgendered people never have surgery at all. The majority of the transformations occur from taking hormone shots. At least as far as I know, they can cost as a little as $10 a week. Top surgery for an FtM (female to male) is about $5000. Many people squirrel away cash for years. Very very few FtMs get the expensive bottom surgery ($30,000-$100,000), but in order to be considered legally male in NYC (last time I checked) you need to have this bottom surgery done.

When you call her transgendered you do it to make fun of her. You're saying that she's ugly because she looks like a transgendered woman, who you think are ugly. And that's why it's offensive to TG people.

43. Today's insults by KO are a direct result of these comments by Coulter
Due to her column answer for if Hillary had a chance in 2008. Her answer was "Chance of what, coming out of the closet? I would say that is even money." He said "so that is a slightly lower odds than you having seen another adult naked, and you are a 45 year old virgin with an adam's apple."

She's fair game. She has made her reputation as a sexy blonde with a brain and she is hideously ugly on the inside.

I think she is probably horrifically offended by what KO said and that pleases me.

None of my GLBT friends are offended by calling her Ann the Man. None.

I think there is a point where we can get so overly sensitive it is absurd. I mean, KO also insulted virgins. Where's the outrage over that?

All of my transgendered friends are insulted by insinuation that transgendered equals ugly woman. And it's easy for someone who is a heterosexual-- what male or female?-- probably white, to tell people who have to fight insults every day of their lives to "lighten up". Very easy for you to say.

All it does is offend transgendered people who come to this site. And it makes us look like bigoted assholes. It does nothing to Ann Coulter.

I'm on the downside of 50, I've been around a while, met a lot of folks, especially when I lived in CT and spent a great deal of time in the Village.

I can't tell you why they aren't offended by it. I think it probably has more to do with her hypocrisy than anything else.

Maybe in our middle age, we just are picking different fights. :shrug:

64. Well, you have an interesting set of TG friends.
The TG academic colleague of mine who is eldest-- she's in her mid sixties, but a woman never tells her age-- shrugs mAnn coulter comments off as just so much more discrimination by ignorant people who probably mean well.

Most of my tranny friends also have larger issues of discrimination to deal with, so they don't hold people they perceive to be their allies to the same sets of standards. "Oh ol' midlodem, he's okay." It doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean that some people who pretend to be allies actually despise transfolks. I'm known a lot of Black folks in my life who've laughed off or shrugged off disparaging remarks in my presence. But if a Black DUer tells me something is offensive, I'm hardly going to tell them that they should get over it because I've seen some of my friends shrug it off.

Also, Greenwich Village and the Castro are bubbles. (GV is less so these days because of NYU's property grabs.) GLBT folks who live in bubbles can easily forget the struggles of GLBT folks who don't. I personally go back and forth between the bubble and the battleground.

You'll also probably find that the SOs of transgendered people are more sensitive to these posts than even TG people themselves. After you see your partner being beaten down by the world and too tired to fight off constant assaults to their humanity, you take out your claws and you refuse to tolerate it for a second longer.

The mAnn Coulter battle isn't a difficult one to fight. You just have to tell people that it's a stupid transphobic joke that wasn't funny before and certainly isn't getting funnier with age.

And, I remember distinctly in the late 60s and early 70s people telling girls, not yet women, not to speak harshly or be too direct less they have a difficult time acquiring their MRS. I think some of this Mann Coulter stuff is more sexist than transphobic. Especially here.

I do have an interesting group of friends, about that you are correct. Probably a factor of some interesting jobs, proximity to a major city, and a desire to explore things which at the time were foreign to me. I spent a tremendous amount of my youth in GV and I suffered a great deal during the 80s when my friends were dying at such a rate that apartments there were a dime a dozen. I don't think that qualifies GV as a bubble. Maybe a little more protected, I don't know.

I'm sorry about the treatment your SO has received. I think that some of the 'transphobia' is more a factor that most of America doesn't know any 'transgendered' persons. Heck, where I live, the only gay people that a lot of my friends know are MY friends. In the burbs, people are worried about their own daily lives and unfortunately, it seems that in that selfish frame, others suffering gets lost. Most of the friends I have here wouldn't discriminate against anyone; it's just that it isn't part of their daily lives, so they don't think about it. A lot of people just don't think about things that don't effect them on a daily basis because they are just trying to get by.

I'll give you a perfect example. I have friends who were having terrible money trouble when their child was diagnosed with cancer. I offered to make their car payment for them back in January until they got caught up and I did. Until last month. My own husband had a quadruple bypass in June and THEIR troubles went completely by the wayside for me. I was SO focused on our own needs and what we had gone through, (long story, but the surgeon essentially told me that he didn't think my husband would survive the surgery. I'm sure you can imagine the horror. This was one week after we buried my FIL who lived with us, who died in his sleep and was found by my 14yo son. Are we having fun yet?)

Anyway. I had faithfully made that payment for them to keep the car out of repossession for 6 months, but last month, I forgot. I got a call today from Capital One that because of their past history, they were going to repo the car unless I paid $966 and some change.

So I did. But, it wasn't foremost in my mind, because I was SO focused on our own situation.

I like to think people are basically good and would do the right thing if shown the way.

In order to accommodate this person my workplace turned one of the employee bathrooms into a unisex bathroom. This person was going from the third floor to the first floor to use the restroom so as not to be recognized. Seems people down there were alarmed at seeing this person in the restroom so they complained to building management.

I found out today that the people who work around this person were also harassing her and leaving notes on her computer.

How juvenile. I cannot begin to imagine what that struggle must be like.

35. My partner has been escorted out of bathrooms and dressing rooms by police
S/he's a very butch transgendered genetic female who takes no hormones and has no surgeries. S/he was thrown out of the women's bathroom in Carnegie Hall by police because someone said there was a "man" in the bathroom. S/he was thrown out of a store by security for asking to try on a men's suit (for college graduation) in the men's dressing area (all completely secure stalls). They said that "she" would be an embarrassment to the other men. They had no problem treating her like a criminal in front of the entire NYC store.

78. Seemless passing has its downsides as well.
When you pass all the time, people think of you as a liar if they find out (and in our age of excessive ID cards, it will happen). Brandon Teena and all that.

That stress is why Leslie went back to being a (in hir words, a "he-she"). My partner will probably not transition. S/he thought s/he wanted to for awhile, but just identifies as a seriously masculine old school butch dyke. S/he IDs as an old school hard butch. There's the old joke about "butch flight" in the lesbian community. There is a bit of pressure to transition to male or "wear gender" like it's a playful fashion show. My partner is neither s/he's just an old school hard butch who loves women.

I think there are other reasons why s/he doesn't want to transition: s/he doesn't want to be perceived "straight", s/he doesn't want to lose her family, s/he's a feminist (has a hard time with the idea of suddenly being awarded white male privelege). We'll see what happens. I wouldn't be surprised at anything.

Each of us has our own biology and life experiences, and specific cultural models available to us upon hitting sexual maturity. "Identity" seems to tangle all of that up in one interconnected mass which is going to stay stable and resists change. (At least for most people. Leslie had an interesting interview with a bigendered person in Transgender Warriors which surprised me. Odd that a bisexual should be surprised at the notion of bigender, no?)

usually genetic men who are bigender and I just don't genetic men in many ways. Leslie's new novel Drag King Dreams (I think it's dreams...) deals with discrimination against bigender folks even within the trans community.

how do we support her in her quest for peace? In the last week she has declared in separate comments that both Bill and Hillary are gay.

If you figure the percentages of people who are men/women, gay/straigt, republican/democrat, trans-gendered/birth-gendered(?), you end up with a dazzling array of combinations of affiliations and identities. Combinations that include Ken Mehlman and the former mayor of Tacoma.

The more trans-gendered people who are out and identified as such, the greater probability that some of them might be...shudder...Republican. Worse yet, one could end up a vitriol-spewing harpie who attacks people on their sexuality to spur publicity.

Surely not all GLBT folks are peace-loving democrats.

Perhaps it is more an issue of the sexist nature of our society. A hard hitting, nasty speaking, unpleasant woman like Ann Coulter might be thought of to have masculine tendencies in her speak and it carries over to her looks.

transgendered people who feel that their state of being is used as a way to denigrate, and feel torn to pieces in the process.

She deliberately plays up the girly act with her scanty dresses and bleached hair. On the other hand, she writes, talks and (likely) thinks like the worst kind of male chauvenist pig. Of all her issues, I believe her hatred of women is so obviously pathological, everyone knows that calling her a "man" will piss her off.

In the meatime, by doing so, we hurt each other.

I have never believed the sex change crap about A.C.. If I have ever described her as "Man" or "It", I'd like somebody to show me because I apologize.

As for the tranny thang, well I got my cred on that. I've been twisted since I was in my teens. I know people. Now I work in Internet porn and let me tell ya kids, pre-op trannies are happening every day - so much so that I'm predicting there'll be millions of them soon if not already. Maybe someday, more folks will be able to go full on transexual but I am positive there will be many that choose to remain pre-op. The "T is here to stay.

Anne Coulter is a woman, complete with ovaries and mammary glands. The fact that she's a woman-hater has nothing and everything to do with her gender.

There are so many things wrong with her, the tranny jibe just seems silly.
