I'm logging in from the Internet Cafe in Heaven right now and all I
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 08:00 PM by Tom Yossarian Joad
can say is, WOW!

I wasn't expecting this, I've had Buddhist and Atheistic leanings my whole life but yesterday at 12:28 CST, I felt a little buzz, blinked my eyes and I was passing a joint to Timothy Leary.

I finished the doob with Tim, had a latte and some awesome banana pudding with 'nilla wafers and went to find someone in charge.

It's really cool up here. Green hills and meadows peeking up out of the clouds, shops here and there that always seem to have whatever you're looking for and they won't take money or anything. They just seem to get off on making other people happy.

I wandered about for what seemed like a couple of hours (time is really whacked up here, it may have been a couple of minutes or a couple of weeks) and ran into a guy sitting on a bench by the side of the path reading a first edition of Huckleberry Finn. He had wild white hair, wore a white poplin suit and twiddled with a fat cigar with a pleasant aroma that wafted through the ether.

"Hi?"

He bent down, plucked a piece of thread from the cuff of his trousers and used it as a bookmark. "Why, is that you, TYJ?" he said with a Missouri accent that reminded me of Jack Nicholson. Tthere was a twinkle in his eye and a sly smile that was contagious.

"Yeap, it's me... And you're...?"

"Yeah, I am. What you think so far? Comfy? Did you see your old pal, Tim. He's a hoot."

Wow, I thought. News travels around here. "Sure did, Mark, er, Sam... Uh, what should I call you?"

He shrugged. "Shoot, I've got a lot of names. My favorite is 'Mysterious Stranger.' Hell, I don't care what people call me as long as it's not late for dinner. I'll bet you have a few questions, eh? Come her. Sit a spell."

I sat down. He pulled out a brown paper sack. "I have tuna... and... looks like tuna. That work for you or I can check the bag again?"

"Tuna's fine," I said. Yeah, I do have a question. I wasn't a religious man, didn't really believe in God, but it's my best guess that I'm in Heaven right now."

"Reckon you are," he said through a mouthful of sandwich. Crumbs of bread and tuna nestled in his mustache. "You seemed surprised?"

"I guess I am, Sam. I never really got into the Bible, Koran, the Talmud or any of the other great religious writings. I fouled up a lot, but I tried to look out for the other guy and do the right thing. But all the Religious leaders kept telling me and people like me we were going to hell. Now here it is and I'm not there. What's up with that?"

Sam shoved the last bit of sandwich in his mouth and washed it down with two fingers of Kentucky that I hadn't noticed before. "That's not your worry, son. I always thought more about the way a man behaved over the way he talked. Enjoy yourself. Head on down the path about half a mile, You'll find Kheph, Nost and That nasty ol' Swamp Rat where he's havin' a crawfish boil. I understand they're havin' some kind of DU get together."

I smiled... No, I grinned and thanked him as I started down the path already smelling the Cajun seasonings in the air.

"Oh! And TYJ! Don't worry about those other books, they were written by men! I wrote this one!"

I looked back and he was holding up a copy of the Collected Works of Mark Twain. And even though I smiled... no, grinned... the tears rolled down my face and I was happy because everything was right with the world.

Dedicated to the good people of DU. :toast:

31. Just Like The Moody Blues said!
"Legend Of A Mind"

Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear.
So raise your glass, we'll drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back firmly on the ground.
He flies so high, he swoops so low,
He knows exactly which way he's gonna go.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
He'll fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
Timothy Leary.

He'll fly his astral plane.
He'll take you trips around the bay.
He'll bring you back the same day.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary.

5. That was just lovely, Tom!
Thanks.

Yes, I would hope, if there is a heaven, it's as you describe. And that God is more like Mark Twain than some vengeful creature to fear.

The most important thing in the world is what people hold in their hearts and the things they do. Not for recognition, but because it feels like the right thing to do.

This is so peaceful. Thanks again.

66. When I had reached a point beyond a life threatening depression,
a friend gave me his tattered copy of Letters From the Earth.

It is my most treasured book. I would not have appreciated it nearly so much had the path not been so rocky leading to sitting with Mr. Twain on a bench in the sunshine.

Dirt roads and meadows without stones to hurt my feet sound just fine. There are enough memories of bruises. Don't need no more stones. Soft meadow grass and dirt suit my soul.

Someday, I'll get brave and post some of my old musings. You and Sam can have a good chuckle.

Letters From the Earth. Best graduation present ever.

44. Here's a bit.... (a couple of tentative paragraphs).
I'm logging in from the Internet Cafe in Heaven right now and all I can say is, WOW!

I wasn't expecting this, I've had Buddhist and Atheistic leanings my whole life but yesterday at 12:28 CST, I felt a little buzz, blinked my eyes and I was passing a joint to Timothy Leary.

I hadn't seen Tim in over 20 years and felt very much at home with him. I remembered a point when I was his media liason at a function and a Young Republican asked "what yould you do if you could live your life all over again?"

Tim answered (this is true) " I would have fucked more and done more acid."

He died shortly after.

However, if you knew Tim and knew the demeanor of the interview you would have known the answer was tonguein-cheek. There were other snippits from that same interview that left Tim giving the advice to 1st vote for the minority and the the woman and then the best white man for the job. Of course, he never knew Condi.

(Okay. A paragraph substantially added). On the first read, I don't like it. I feel it detracts from the feel of the story.

On the other hand, it might help in the set-up.

What do you think?

61. Thank ye kindly, TJY, for the heads up to your
Not So Innocents Abroad.

You and Sam are two of my faovrite writers.

Yes, a rollicking time in heaven for those who really care to see.

Heaven or hell, we have the makins for both at our fingertips. Our choice.

Thank you, friend Tom, I needed your view this night more than you could ever know.

And how grand to get to spend timeless with Kheph, Nost, and I bet, Andy too.

Are there old cats in heaven? My old cat comes, from time to time, and reminds me things will be just fine.

Just fine.

Peace, brothers and sisters of my heart.

Gods and poets, bless us, everyone.

Thanks TJY. You can never fathom just how much this gift meant to me right now.
You threw a rope as the water was getting dark.

so, I decided to add another K&R. You have a unique talent for writing. I can't wait to experience the Heavenly Internets. I got to meet Master Leary once when he gave a lecture at the Caravan of Dreams. What a moment in time that was, although it was over to quickly in my mind of perception.

It's really an honor that you got to spend time with him and that he liked your writing. Consider yourself very lucky and fortunate.

114. LOL I was sorta surprised to read you were old enough to have met Tim
Had you pegged of a mere lad of 40-something. Guess you could be and met Tim while on a tricycle tour of your block or something.

Yep, Heinlein AND Clemens fan. Oh, and a little Heller, but never read Catch 22. It was too popular. I don't follow herds much ;)

Moon is a Harsh Mistress is one I enjoyed, Glory Road, and I AM a Stranger in a Strange Land. Several others, but not really a big dent in the vast body of work the man turned out. He must not have slept.

Not long ago, got Farnham's Freehold. Scary and funny as hell. I remember those bomb shelter zanies.

And then there's Job. Gotta be one of my favotites.

I figure Sam and Robert are great pals in that place with no stones to hurt one's feet. Or maybe the same soul in two lifetimes. I know a cat like that.

113. Note about this thread and the Greatest Page
Elad went into the database and discovered that this thread had been accidentally "unlinked" which prevented it from appearing on the Greatest Page.

After some deliberation we decided to re-link it, although this is against our better judgement given the way that this was handled by the OP. Let me make it clear to everyone that if you have a problem with a technical matter on the message board, you should contact an Admin and wait for a response rather than spamming the message board with inappropriate threads.

Thank you for your understanding,
EarlG
