The Democratic Party's Orwellian Response To World War III

What's become clear to me is that the Democratic Party (even it's allegedly anti-war wing) will not try to stop this insanity, and in fact will probably be led as meekly to the slaughter as it was during the runup to the Iraq invasion. Watching the Dems line up to salute the Israeli war machine, hearing the uncomfortable and awkward silence descend on most of Left Blogistan once the bombs started falling in Lebanon, seeing how easily the same Orwellian propaganda tricks worked their magic on the pseudoliberals -- all this doesn't leave too much room for doubt. As long as World War III can be sold as protecting the security and survival of the Jewish state, I suspect the overwhelming majority of Democrats, or at least the overwhelming majority of Democratic politicians, will support it.

2. Would we really consider this Worl War 3?
What makes this World War 3? I am not saying it is or isn't. It just seems unconventional. The actual governments of the Middle East don't seem to be doing any of the fighting. NATO is in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban, which is not currently a part of the government. US and UK are in Iraq fighting insurgents, not the government. Israel is fighting Hezbollah not Lebanon. So is it NATO/ISRAEL VS ISLAMIC INSURGENTS and if so does that equal World War 3?

6. WWII was pretty tame in europe until 39.
Sure the Japanese were slaughtering Chinese and Koreans by the tens of thousands, but that was an unconventional war in a distant and backward region. Sure Italy was off slaughtering Ethiopians and other assorted darker skinned people, but that was not a real war. Sure Hitler was chomping off chunks of this and that, but it wasn't into the trenches like the Great War, and that whole thing in Spain was after all an internal affair.

The fighting is widespread and has been increasing in intensity and there are great powers involved directly or indirectly. All the ingredients for a general conflagration are in place. Oil and Water are vital fluids and we humans are going to slaughter each other in great numbers over control of these resources.

12. Some people count the Spanish Civil War ('36) as the start of WW2
Also a proxy war that most of the rest of the world tried its best to ignore. It also was immensely divisive politically.

11. I think he means Eschaton, firedoglake, maybe The News Blog
For example, despite $3 billion yearly, and helpful deliveries of bombs and jet fuel, Atrios has declared that this isn't a U.S. matter, unlike Iraq.

4. Ask Cynthia McKinney
How pleasant it is to be targeted for defeat by AIPAC. As long as they have the power to defeat any politician who challenges them, no politician will challenge them.

9. They had her debate with (?, I didn't get her opponents name)
but she actually crushed him (shown on C-Span). He was not able to deviate from a preset meme (one can only imagine where that came from, being the Repubs contributed to his campaign). I know she is tainted, but after that debate, it is hard to see how anyone can vote against her!

5. The next paragraph is also interesting
--And it is being sold, ferociously. A number of wealthy pro-Israel donors, including Ronald Lauder, the perfume heir, have given millions to something called the Israel Project -- a "public education" cum PR cum grassroots lobbying machine -- to fund a program specificially aimed at building support for a military strike on Iran. You can't turn on Fox News these days without finding James Woolsey or Newt Gingrich or Bill Kristol or some other pro-Israel mouthpiece demanding war with Syria and/or Iran, and painting it as the only way to stop the rockets falling on Haifa.--

There is only The Party when it comes to 90% of foreign affairs issues.

13. As long as this regional conflict is sold as World War III we've problems.
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 06:51 PM by KrazyKat
Although the conflict is a serious one, it is nothing new. the peoples of that area have had tribal conflicts since they walked upright. Granted, today's deadly technology portends worse things every time a hot spot in the world flares up.

Nevertheless, I continue to wince every time I hear "WWIII" blared over the corporate media. It's no secret that the neocons want to market this conflict in that extreme matter to further divide the American people.
