Rumsfeld's resignation could be bad for Dems
If Bush were to get rid of Rumsfeld before the 2008 election, appoint a new team to fix the problems in Iraq, brings in someone who knows something about war (NOT Lieberman) and who looks competent, would Americans give him/the GOP another chance and keep them in control of Congress?

I think maybe (can you tell I'm completely paranoid about American voters after the last 3 elections?)

Which is the Hobson's choice. There will be more loss of life with Rumsfeld as Sec. Defense. But, if the GOP stays in control of this country, we could be in WWIII soon or at least in Iran.

So we should call for his resignation and cross our fingers Bush is too stupid (scared?) to do it. (Scared cause I don't think Bush wants to do this job by himself.)

1. Won't happen.
This administration has yet to hold any of its insiders accountable. If it did happen it would be an admission of failure - which is the other thing this administration has never done, even while america's living rooms were flooded with the drowned corpses of new orleans.

2. * won't let Rummy go. It would be admitting he screwed up
and he never does that. AND Rummy won't go. He would have to be dragged out and would leave clawmarks all the way down the halls of the Pentagon. These two are on a mission and are legends in their own sick minds.

3. Cheney wouldn't allow it
He and Rummy are co-conspirators and go way back to the Nixon era. There's no chance of Rummy being booted as long as Cheney is still in the Veep's chair.

4. I Don't Think
Anyone could fix the mess that Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, et al created in Iraq - not that Cheney would ever stand for Rumsfeld (who gave him his start in the Unitary Executive of Tricky Dick Nixon) being given the boot.

that be recognized the necessity of doing something to assure a caretaker government is in place.

They can't put that off forever. Rummy is obviously the first one who has to go in any cleanup. Then Cheney. Then all the rest of the OSP-AIPAC and Plamegate traitors who dragged us into Iraq, and now to the brink with Iran.

I still believe that somehow this country will save itself. This is the only way to do it.

8. fix Iraq?:
Iraq is lost. Gone. Beyond repair. FUBAR.

There is no fixing it, there is only what type of retreat we'll be chosing, if that choice is left to us.

9. Even if Rummy did resign
Bush would just stick another frat brother in there. Competence wouldn't even be a factor.

11. We're talking about lives here.
If bush* would get someone competent in the position and stop the killing of Iraqis and Americans then he can have all the good publicity he wants for it. We'd still have the asshole on the economy, war crimes, anti-Constitutional power grabs, restricting freedoms, his environmental record...... Isn't that enough?

Of course that worst thing is that if he removes rummy, the successor will be just as bad. Recent history shows us that.

13. Bush would never appoint anybody competent
Harding had a better than Bush record in that respect. At least besides Harry Daugherty as Attorney General, Albert Fall as Interior Secretary and a bunch of other crooks and cronies from Ohio, Harding also appointed former President William Howard Taft as Chief Justice, Charles Evans Hughes as Secretary of State and Herbert Hoover as Commerce Secretary, all of whom served with distinction.

Bush can't seem to find anyone to appoint who doesn't have a conflict of interest or isn't willing to lie. There ought to be war crimes trials of Bush and Bush appointees by the bushel, just over the manipipulation of intelligence prior to invading Iraq.

14. At this point .. I don't care who fixes the shit
so long as it gets fixed.

Would I prefer it be a dem? Yes of course, but if Rummy resigns and they stick someone competent enough in.. so be it! People are dying if there is fix lets no even mince politics over it.

16. I put myself in the shoes of someone with a child/spouse in Iraq
So, for the people serving over in that fiasco, I hope someone qualified takes over the job. We all know that won't happen though...
