2. Is 1600 AM any more powerful than 1190?

I'm in the Hartford, CT area and can get WLIB in okay on my car radio when I'm on the highway... but, when I leave the highway, I often lose the signal completely.

Not to mention that not far from my home is a very weak local religious station that is around 1190 or 1200 AM.

1600 is the worst signal in the band for transmitting. It really shows the lack of understanding radio that they would move their flagship to 1600. This is a downgrade to their audience.

There might be legal obstacles to upgrading one's signal.

Obviously, what is best for me is for AAR to get a station in the Hartford, CT area... but, until they do it is a mediocre signal out of NYC, or a mediocre one out of Framingham, Mass, or a poor one out of New Haven, CT.

From what I was reading, WLIB was really putting the squeeze on AAR, essentially telling them they'd have to buy the station or get lost. AAR had one lease extension, but they were going to be off the air at the end of this month if they didn't get another station lined up. And that would've really sucked.

Anyone in the NYC metro area try tuning in to 1600 at night, to see how well (or not) the 5,000 watts are broadcasting?

15. It's not always the power

the transmitting signal is not in a perfect circle. Lots of stations have narrow oval type patterns, and if they're near a coast, much of the signal can end up out at sea broadcasting to the boats and fish.

There are plenty of weak signals in the 600 range (where they "ought" to be strongest).
