Matt from MyDD busted them big time....

Lieberman Keeps Getting Classier

by Matt Stoller, Fri Aug 04, 2006 at 11:19:01 AM EST

Update: I see Aldon had this first.

Ok, so this is instructive, so bear with me for a bit while I walk through one particular person who seemed to be spearheading he Lieberman charge at the cheeseburger joint yesterday. The Record-Journal story pointed out that the main guy harrassing Ned was named Richard Goodstein.

"It was supposed to be a laid-back event and (they) ruined it." "We're just using our right. We're just exercising our rights to enjoy a burger," said Lieberman supporter Alex Hoffman of Boston. Supporters of each candidate debated outside on the sidewalk while many Lieberman supporters continued to badger Lamont, who acknowledged most questions. Richard Goodstein, one of the most vocal Lieberman supporters, repeatedly shouted, "Are you a Bill Clinton Democrat or an Al Sharpton Democrat?" Lamont calmly said he supported both.

Is this the same Richard Goodstein who gave Lieberman $1500 for his 2004 Presidential run? Because that Goodstein is a lobbyist in DC for the chemical and health supplies industry.

I'm not sure if it's the same guy. You decide. Here's a pic from the event.

And here's a pic from Richard Goodstein's bio at the National Home Infusion Assocation's 2nd Annual Legislative Conference. The NHIA "represents and advances the interests of organizations and individuals that provide infusion and specialized pharmacy products and services to the entire spectrum of home-based patients."

It sure looks to me like Lieberman is bringing up lobbyists from DC to set up ambushes for Ned Lamont. This continues to feel like a campaign against well-paid three year olds.

27. What kind of democrat is Rich Goodstein?
Answer: Rich Goodstein is a Joe Lieberman Democrat, a K Street Democrat, and -- most tellingly -- a FOX News Democrat.

Say hi to Tammy Bruse for all of us here... Dick.

4. Isn't Hadassah Lieberman a lobbyist for Pharmaceuticals?
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 10:52 AM by Mabus
Hmmm.

on edit:

“Sen. Lieberman has long been known to cultivate the insurance and pharmaceutical industries, which provide jobs in his home state and contributions to his campaign fund. But he has literally been sleeping with one of their Washington representatives ever since his wife, Hadassah, joined Hill & Knowlton last year. The legendary lobbying and PR firm hired her as a ’senior counselor’ in its ‘health and pharmaceuticals practice.’…It would be uplifting to imagine that Hill & Knowlton—after spending the past decade as a defendant in tobacco class-action lawsuits because of its role in propaganda disputing the deadly effects of smoking—is now devoted to improving everybody’s health. More likely, the firm remains devoted to improving the profits of its clientele, which has historically included Enron, the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, Saudis, Kuwaitis, American International Group and Boeing.” David Sirota quoting Joe Conanson http://davidsirota.com/index.php/2006/07/31/from-his-glass-house-lieberman-attacks-lamonts-wife/

34. That's the one - anything for their clients
Controversies

Hill & Knowlton has generated a fair amount of controversy. Numerous PR campaigns, on behalf of both governments and private industry appear to violate both industry ethics and civil statutes. In 1991, Hill & Knowlton received $14 million from countries known to abuse human rights, including China, Peru, Indonesia, and Egypt. They have also taken on cases that dealt with corporate crime, including the El Paso natural gas case and the Bank of Credit and Commerce International case. The company has been involved in possible government conspiracies including the alleged October Surprise and has worked for the CIA in cases where overseas offices acted as covers for US agents.

Another controversial issue is the use of propaganda by Hill & Knowlton. Since the 1930s, public relations and propaganda have merged into a profitable business, with H&K making up to $350 per hour. This increased revenue gives them the funds and ability to influence public opinion. Several examples show their use of propaganda on behalf of clients:

* In 1953, Members of the Tobacco Industry hired the firm to help counteract recent scientific findings that suggested cigarette smoking led to cancer. As a result “A Frank Statement” was released to nearly every major newspaper and magazine, misleading readers into believing that cigarettes had no verifiable links to cancer.
* In 1990, on behalf of the US-funded and US-directed Citizens for a Free Kuwait, H&K researched and then created stories and “eye-witness” testimonies that described Iraqi atrocities that would build public support for Desert Storm. These "eye-witnesses" were presented to the Congressional Human Rights Caucus and included the fraudulent "Nayirah" testimony that played a major role in involving the US in the Gulf War. She testified that she had witnessed Iraqi soldiers killing hundreds of premature babies at the al-Addan hospital in Kuwait City. "They took the babies out of the incubators, took the incubators, and left the babies on the cold floor to die," she said. Congressmen were stunned. It was only after Desert Storm had officially ended that ABC reporter John Martin discovered that the none of these tales of atrocities were true. "Nayirah" was actually the daughter of the royal family member Saud Nasir al-Sabaah, the Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States. Without Hill & Knowlton's PR, the Gulf War would not have been as favorable to Americans. Much is made that at this time H&K's Washington office was headed by Craig Fuller, the former chief of staff and good friend of George Bush, Sr.
* Coppertone, a company that creates and sells sun care products, enlisted H&K in 1994 in order to boost profit. H&K exaggerated scientific reports of a depleted ozone layer to encourage the general public to protect themselves from skin cancer by using Coppertone's products. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_&_Knowlton

Just sayin. Joe has lost his way, and it is unfortunate that this is a big pharma company, but any senator would do the same for his state's largest employers. Yes, Joe is too cozy with them. But I'm not entirely sure this one is because of ties to the industry, or just a matter of protecting constituency.

I know I've been one of the most vocal against Joe, but I'm sure this is much of an issue. After all, there is so much else he's fucked up.

47. Here's the bio referred to above
Richard Goodstein is a Washington lawyer who has seen public policy issues unfold from many perspectives. Mr. Goodstein graduated from Wesleyan University with honors in 1974 and from Georgetown University Law Center magna cum laudein 1978. By that time he had already worked for United States Senators Abraham Ribicoff and Hubert Humphrey. Mr. Goodstein then clerked for Judge William B. Bryant, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Mr. Goodstein worked at the distinguished Washington law firm of Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale & Dorr and then as Vice President for National Government Affairs of a large company in the environmental services industry. Mr. Goodstein is now Washington Representative for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., and for Air Products Healthcare, one of the most prominent companies in the home medical equipment field. Mr. Goodstein has been an active advocate on behalf of Air Products Healthcare in Congress and with the administrators of the Medicare program. Mr. Goodstein also appears regularly on the Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and other TV networks to offer political and legal analysis.

50. Goodstein confirmed to be the same guy on TPM
http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2006/aug/04/ct_sen_goodstein_email_me_the_last_good_story_you_wrote_about_joe_lieberman

When I asked him if I could confirm that he'd said what the paper said he had, Goodstein asked me why I wanted to do that and whether I worked for the paper. I said I didn't and noted that I wanted to get confirmation of his quotes straight from him.

After a hurried back-and-forth, Goodstein said: "Do me a favor: Email me the last good story you wrote about Joe Lieberman." When I asked why that was relevant, Goodstein said: "Bye. Bye." End of conversation.

Well, at least now we know for certain who the mystery man in the diner was, and that he's the same Richard Goodstein as the D.C. lobbyist Richard Goodstein. But I didn't get to ask him about the nature of the Lieberman supporters' surprise of Lamont or about the nature of Goodstein's relationship to the campaign. I've got a call into the Lieberman campaign about this. Hopefully we'll have more soon.

54. More on Goodstein here...
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001275.php

For many years he was a staff lobbyist for Browning Ferris Industries, a giant in the trash hauling business. In 1998, when BFI closed its Washington office, he struck out on his own. Aside from a mining concern and a fuel company, Lexmark and the two Air Products divisions have been his main clients since then.

Of course, waste-related lobbying hasn't distracted him from another major role: being a constant commentator on FOX. Nexis shows at least three dozen appearances on the network by Goodstein between 1998 and 2002. There and in other media, he has alternately been described as a Democratic "strategist," "adviser" and "lawyer."

Since 2002, Goodstein has lobbied for only a few clients: Kentucky-based technology manufacturer Lexmark, Inc.; Pennsylvania-based Air Products & Chemicals, an $8.1 billion concern which sells hydrogen, oxygen and other gases; and Pennsylvania-based Air Products Healthcare, which appears to be a division of AP&C.

Despite the short client list, Goodstein doesn't seem to hurt for cash: last year he pulled in at least $360,000 in fees from those three clients. In other words, he could certainly afford that hamburger.

60. BFI is a trashy company (pun intended):
Joementum has some seedy friends:

http://www.ebic.org/pubs/BFIAlliedprof.html

<snip>
BFI and its subsidiaries have a long checkered past when it comes to both polluting the environment and dealing fairly with competition. BFI's violations range from illegal disposal of hazardous wastes to price fixing/anti-trust violations; and, state officials have pled guilty to accepting bribes from BFI. Recently, BFI compiled a ten-year history of their company and presented it to Pennsylvania's DER in response to questions about the company's integrity with regards to a proposed 154-acre landfill in Berks county. They admitted to the following: 270 civil penalties, administrative orders, permit or license suspensions and revocations, as well as bond forfeiture actions, 10 misdemeanor or felony convictions and pleas; 24 court decrees or settlement orders and one pending court case. (10) (It must be noted that this is merely covers the period from 1981-1991.) In addition, BFI and subsidiaries have disclosed more than $75.5 million in fines and settlements from 1972-1994. (11) This is by no means a comprehensive list. Complete data concerning fines on numerous violations are simply unavailable. This data serves to illustrate the scope BFI's violations and its history of disregard for the law.
</snip>

1989:A New Jersey grand jury indicted John A. Pinto (BFI regional vice president,1975-1981) for customer allocation and coercion in price fixing scheme from 1970-1984. In 1989, Pinto plead guilty and paid a $50,00 fine. Pinto continued to receive $125,000/year until 1984 when he retired. "As set forth in testimony before the New York State Assembly Committee, Pinto clearly had ties to organized crime, and was appointed by and reported directly to, John Drury, BFI's president." (18)
1990: $30.5 million out of court settlement resulting from a class action lawsuit brought by customers against BFI and WMI alleging price fixing and customer allocation. (19)
1994: $4.2 million fine in Kane County. IL, for price fixing. (20)

Here's who Joe's gonna send to the next Lamont rally:

59. Damn, DU is so "value added" today. This really hits home.
It's the preppy riot.

Imagine the famous attorney Joseph Welch delivering this line in a Senate hearing room:

"Mr Lieberman, at long last, have you no sense of shame?"

Perfect.

64. Kick to the top so that everyone will read it - this has to stop
Lieberman is lying when he says he doesn't have anyone's interests ahead of the people of the state of Connecticut - obviously, he doesn't care WHO will speak out for him, as long as he can stay in the Senate and smear Democrats!!

I've had enough of Red Joe.
His career is over.
The war is his to regret, but this election has to be about how he supported the war, even after new information has been released telling us how they lied us into the Iraq War.

GOOD-BYE, JOE!

70. I came close to going to that.
Fortunately for them, I did not. I can have a short fuse and getting one's ass kicked (verbally, of course :7) by a short, blonde surburban mom wouldn't look too good either for that pathetic pisser.

I can't wait until Tuesday primary. Buh bye, Joe! :woohoo:
