Subtle, but insidious ... check your local paper today. Did they offer screaming headlines about how the Senate "rejected a minimum wage increase"? Of course they did. And, if your paper is like most others, it's not until the tinier subheads or the really fine print that you're reminded of all the other nasty stuff in that bill, most notably the end of the estate tax.
It would have been just as valid to write a headline that says "Senate fails to kill estate tax" with a tiny subheadline that says "Measure was linked to minimum-wage increase," but that would be putting an
unacceptable spin on things. When it's the other way around, though, it's merely
fair and balanced.Surprisingly, of the dozens of newspapers I checked randomly this morning at the Newseum, more than half had no front-page story at all on the vote (perhaps because it came so late for the East). But of those that did, there were some real whoppers. Get a load of
this headline from the front page of the Las Vegas Review Journal!

Kudos, however, to these papers (among others, perhaps) that GOT IT:

The News Tribune, Tacoma: Tax, wage bill dies in Senate
