NBC just referred to Sen Clinton as "Hillary"!
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 06:28 AM by chimpymustgo
Jim Mikleshevsky (sp?) doing report on the Today about the "confrontation" between Sen Clinton and Rumsfeld yesterday. After talking about her calling for Rumsfeld's resignation, Mik said "Rumsfeld had refused to testify, then HILLARY wrote a letter"...

Now Howard Fineman is on with "analysis", and HE refers to her as "Hillary".

All this is in the context of "Hillary" representing the center of the party, yadayadayada...

But everyone keeps referring to her as "Hillary." I understand that she uses the name in her own advertising, but I never hear them call Leiberman "Joementum". They call everyone else by their last names or titles, and sometimes do refer to her as Senator Clinton. But I don't think she should ever be called by her first name by a reporter or commentator. Definitely sexist IMO. And I'm not a "Hillary for President" fan (LOL).

1. I have to agree with you. I'm no partisan for Hillary
but she deserves the same respect from reporters and commentators as does Any Other Senator.

No bias there. Nothing to see here. Move Along. :sarcasm:

Ugh.

I agree its poor form, but I also think they do that to differentiate
between Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Not defending it, mind you, but I can understand it as a way to not confuse people. If you said Clinton lambasted Rumsfeld, people would be confused.

HOWEVER, knowing that, it takes very little effort to make it Hillary Clinton or Senator Clinton.

30. Calling her 'Senator Clinton' would do that.
Or even 'Mrs. Clinton,' although that would not give her the respect that her office should demand.

2. I've never heard them refer to Kay Bailey Hutchinson as "Kay..."

...or Elizabeth Dole as "Libby."

Not only sexist, but clearly holdovers from the Clinton haters of the 90's.:grr:

No other woman politician is referred to by their first name.

20. one little thing..
Dole's nickname is "Liddy", not "Libby." And I can't stand her! She got elected and then has barely been seen in North Carolina since!

5. i call her "Hillary" most of the times
but i agree, if it's a news report they should refer to her as Senator Clinton and at the very least either Hillary Clinton or Mrs. Clinton.

it might be partly sexist, but i wonder if it has to do with her being a democrat also. it seems they are more respectful of that cold hearted Laura Bush who is usually referred to as "first lady laura bush" . hmmmmmm, id on't remember them regularly calling Hillary "first lady hillary clinton" when Bill was Pres.

6. Its seems that "Hillary" has become synonymous with her in politics
If I'm writing something about her on DU or elsewhere I probably wouldn't take the time to write out Hillary Clinton or Senator Clinton, Hillary will usually suffice to get the point across.

It also serves to distinguish her from her husband who was referred frequently throughout most of his presidency as simply "Clinton"

11. "Jackie" and "Lady Bird" come to mind...could be affectionate?
Referring to Democratic first ladies by their first names? However, Mrs. Clinton is a US Senator and deserves a bit more deference. And then there's "run, Jesse, run!" OK to call black men by their first names, too? Very interesting topic!

12. it just goes to show the power the woman has that when they say HILLARY
they are not just talking about any HILLARY. they are talking about hillary and the world knows it. they are the ones who, in wanting to smear egg on hillary's face, ended up being smeared with their own egg.

13. Hmmm, I recall also hearing someone say there are only a very few
people who have reached the status to be recognized by a single name! In that context they mentioned Cher, Operah, and Hillary!

I honestly think it depends on how the user uses her name in their comment.

Period. It's really quite simple. To not address her correctly is to show a casual lack of respect.

17. I agree... Calling her 'Hillary' diminishes the effect.
It would be better to call her 'Sen. Clinton' in the context of offical business.

Especially, when they're discussing Rummy's job performance.

16. When she was running for Senator
I went to her website and ordered coffee cups, bumper stickers and mouse pads....all materials offered with the word "Hillary."

If she is the Dem nominee for President, what will she do about the "name" problem? "Hillary 08" sounds non-professional, if you know what I mean, but "Clinton 08" reminds everyone of Bill, and ignites passions of hatred in repuke minds.

Sounds trivial, but I think her name is a problem.

28. If I hadn't already supported Senator Clinton, I sure would now
Rumsfield is a fool. He doesn't know what he's doing, and I'm glad Senator Clinton asked for
his resignation.

As far as calling her Hillary, even though he might have done it to degrade her, it doesn't really matter to me one way or another. I just consider the source. I'll continue to call the "president" George Bush or W. and will keep calling Condolesa "Condi."

Go Hillary; give them hell right back. You have taken more than your share. :yourock:
