Liebermann THUGS begin fights with Lamont supporters tonite
((I have a hard time copying and pasting from mydd.com for some weird reason, so only put up a portion of the big post. Can't believe Liebermann is resorting to these rovian tactics. Go read all of the crazy going-on's.))

great big snip

A large man, about 50 years old or so then started screaming at Ned, "Are you an Al Sharpton Democrat, or a Bill Clinton Democrat?" Ned was trying to answer, and the gentleman kept yelling. The Lamont press secretary tried to intervene, and meanwhile, the people behind the counter who owned the restaurant were horrified and embarrassed. Then Ned Lamont went up to the few people in regular clothes and introduced himself, even as the Lieberman supporters kept screaming. He also tried to introduce himself to the Lieberman staffers, but to no avail. The screaming continued, and it was so abrasive that he left, and the whole crowd followed him outside.

please go and read the whole thing, you will not believe this shit:

2. LIEberman really IS a Republican, isn't he?
I remember attending a Clinton rally in 1992, there were some Bush I supporters there (they were the frat boy types) and they were itching for a fight but no one at the rally gave it to them.

I hope this gets reported in Connecticut.

3. Sounds like Lieberman is borrowing a page from the Republican play book
This thread in the Minnesota Forum relates how the Republican candidate's (6th District) thugs did their best to keep the DFL candidate's people from working the crowd at a parade. Per the article, when the Repuke candidate heard of the complaints her response was "So sue me."

4. NOM! I just tried to copy the first couple of para's, and the same
thing happened.

Tried again, here's the first two for you:

So I just tracked this down with several sources, and something really strange is going on. Lieberman's campaign seems to arming his supporters with aggressive talking points in order to pick fights at Lamont events. There were two separate events today where this happened. At a Machinists union endorsement event for Ned, some Lieberman supporters (probably paid) started arguing with union members, and a sign got torn.

Later in the day, Ned was ambushed at a diner stop. At 5pm, Ned was scheduled to stop at a cheeseburger joint in Meridan (Ted's Cheeseburgers). The burgers were really good, apparently, and the place is famous for delicious cheeseburgers. Mmm. As I write this it's dinner time.

21. How to deal with the copying thing.
Some sites just have this problem, line MyDD, Yahoo News, and New Standard News. Here's a fix. Start your mouse drag copy at the bottom of the article and work up. Paste into Notepad or equivalent text-only window. Copy selected portions from Notepad to here or elsewhere plus URL.

37. It's not Lamont's fault that Lieberman's staff refused to rule that out.
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 11:20 PM by KaptBunnyPants
And I haven't seen it brought up since Lieberman finally did rule it out. But ignoring all of that, how can you possibly think that rumor mongering is worse than a planned physical assault on a campaign event? Has it really gotten to the point where you view Democrats who support Lamont as unworthy of the right to assemble?

edit: I wanted to make it more clear that Lieberman has ruled out a bid on the Republican ticket.

He took advantage of the fact that the staffer wasn't trained to answer that question. And this is not the way to gain sympathy for what happened today.

Rumor mongering has a much more vast effect on the electorate, as you continue to demonstrate with your post.

44. I said Lieberman ruled it out, so I don't know why you tried to correct me
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 11:18 PM by KaptBunnyPants
And I am not talking about the effect it has on the campaign, I'm talking about what I thought were universal principles of a non-violent political process. I haven't seen Lieberman’s rallies busted up, so I don't know why you feel the need to defend these thugs. I wouldn't even physically assault actual Republicans, much less other Democrats.

The rumor was started when Republicans in Connecticut considered endorsing Lieberman. And that inexperienced staffer was Lieberman’s campaign deputy press secretary; if he doesn't know the answer to that question it shouldn't have taken him that long to find out.

edit: On edit, I can see where the confusion came from, I was a little unclear in my original reply. I will correct that.

48. Not half as bad as putting yourself in a position where it might be true.
If it was such a far-fetched rumor, why did it gain so much traction?

Oh, because I would say it's not a rumor but a possible unsubstantiated fact. When you are the "Republican's favorite Democrat" odds are that you aren't favored by true progressives.

The reality is that Joe Lieberman running as a Republican is not a far fetched idea. In fact, it makes a decent amount of sense, him running as a "Northeastern Republican ". Who would believe that Kerry would run as a Republican?? No one. But with Lieberman, it's a distinct possibility.

It says a lot about his character, IMO, and why it appears that the Connecticut voters will be removing him from office very soon.

78. Why is it a rumor?
Don't actions speak louder than words? In Lieberman's case, his votes speak the loudest to me, not any internet chatter... Lieberman has consistently voted with the republicans on very important issues...

I also think it strange you could equate a rumor started on the internet to a personal affront done to the candidate himself... I find one to be much more intolerable than the other... If Lieberman's camp wants to start their own rumor, then fine, start one.. To deliberately attack a candidate in person is defined as how low can you go?

67. This is starting to annoy me more and more every day
From Wikipedia (not the best source of information, but in this case, good enough).

Godwin's Law (also Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is a mainstay of Internet culture, an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. It is particulary concerned with logical fallacies such as reductio ad Hitlerum, wherein an idea is unduly dismissed or rejected on ground of it being associated with persons generally considered "evil".

The law states:

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

Godwin observed that people had increasingly begun to compare anyone and anything they mildly disliked with Hitler and/or Fascism.
Godwin's Law does not dispute whether, in a particular instance, a reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be apt. It is precisely because such a reference or comparison may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin argues in his book, Cyber Rights: Defending Free Speech in the Digital Age, that hyperbolic overuse of the Hitler/Nazi comparison should be avoided, as it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.

Although in one of its early forms Godwin's Law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions, the law is now applied to any threaded online discussion: electronic mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and so on.

There is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress.

In my opinion, calling anyone a Nazi except an actual honest to god Nazi clouds debate and makes it impossible to continue a reasonable discussion. It should be considered, in my opinion, flaming. Calling people other than Nazis Nazis, or saying that someone uses Nazi tactics is extremely disrespectful to all who lost their lives during that period.

Nazi tactics included gassing the handicapped in specially designed busses. Are you saying that Lamont's people were doing that?

93. "Loyal...Democrat" no way, not Smokin' Joe Lieberman...
Smokin' his wheels as he distances Democrats in trouble.

1) He goes on the Sensate floor to blast Clinton's private life at a really critical moment.

Mr. Morality has no problems with *'s violence toward Iraq, New Orleans, and the world in general
through neglect of our looming eco catastrophe. Sex ... oh, so bad; violence, well, damn, old Joe's
into that in a big way.

2) He caves in during the Florida recount, the one moment when we needed fighting Democrats on the
line knocking heads. He could have been a powerful voice countering Baker's bully boy tactics. But
no it was moderate Joe, hitting the road and saying 'cya around fellas, I'm outta here.'

LOYAL and LIEBERMAN are not words to use in the same sentence unless it questions his loyalty to the
Democratic Party. I say that as a precinct level worker for the party. I want people with guts and
staying power, not a perfumed prince who preaches but procrastinates when it's time to fight.

94. cmkramer-- "Lieberman has never been anything but a completley loyal
moderate to liberal Democrat."

Are you frickin' KIDDING me?!

That's why this guy is going down like the Titanic. He's screwed us over time and time again, told us to shut up and not criticize bush, has been more enthusiastic for Bushco's malevolent policies than he has been for the moderate/liberal ideals, has badmouthed us repeatedly on Fox News, and on and on. Here is one perfect little example of the way Joe has treated us. Please note the quote in bold:

In August of 2000, accompanied by three-card Bennett, Holy Joe attended a confab to an audience consisting of members of (who else?) The Heritage Foundation and Progressive Foundation (we'll discuss them in second) glitterati. You can really feel the love for Democratic party here:

...Lieberman criticized his own party as much as Republicans...
He got his biggest applause -- and laughter -- when he called himself a Democrat "who is not ashamed to embrace a purportedly Republican idea like cutting the capital gains tax to spur economic growth -- and I'm not hesitant to say we shouldn't spend the peace dividend on new social programs."...

After the cheers, Lieberman paused. "That doesn't happen when I use that line on a Democratic audience," he said. (Hartford Courant, August 9, 2000)

Does that sound like loyalty to you?

9. Last paragraph here, whap!
It's like third grade version of Karl Rove, and it really upset all the people at the various events, who are now going to tell everyone in their town about it. Connecticut is still a small town state, and this does not go over well. Picking a fight and then blaming it on the people you picked a fight with is an interesting tactic, and an extremely high risk move to get the reporters to do a feeding frenzy on the movement behind Lamont. The Lieberman campaign is hoping that the press will pick up their narrative, and begin to express the same outrage that Lieberman feels at his challenger, and the people of Connecticut who are unhappy with their Senator. How dare they?!?! was always the unstateed campaign message, and now, apparently it's also the new field strategy

Greenfield: It's more than just Iraq
Lieberman has long been on the outs with his party's base

Jeff Greenfield
CNN Senior Analyst

NEW YORK (CNN) -- If the latest Quinnipiac University Poll is right, three-term Sen. Joseph Lieberman is headed for defeat Tuesday in Connecticut's Democratic primary, and Iraq -- more specifically, his steadfast support for that war -- is the big reason.

But it's not the only reason, which is something those looking for broader lessons from this primary campaign might keep in mind.

20. Freakin' Losers!
On the other side ..The Nation had an excellent article by John Nichols on Lamont and lieman today..

Snips~

"So why is the challenger seemingly so at ease with just a few weeks to go before the primary? Why is Ned Lamont smiling? "I love being in this race," the candidate declares, without a hint of irony, to the crowd at an Indian restaurant in downtown Stamford after a long evening of answering questions he has answered a few hundred times before. That's the secret of Ned Lamont. He is not merely the "cable TV millionaire" reporters mention when seeking a shorthand description for the 52-year-old former newspaper editor, public radio host, local elected official, telecommunications entrepreneur and Democratic donor who was drawn into the race against Lieberman only after more prominent war foes begged off. Rather, he is a self-admitted political junkie who, like a rock critic who finally forms a band, has been waiting a very long time for this chance in the spotlight. Maybe a lifetime. After all, it's in his blood.

Lamont's great-grandfather Thomas Lamont, whose partnership with J.P. Morgan created the family fortune that has provided a firm financial base for Ned's business and political endeavors, was one of Woodrow Wilson's negotiators on the Treaty of Versailles. Ned's great-uncle Corliss was a leading figure in the American Civil Liberties Union and a founder of the National Emergency Civil Liberties Committee who successfully sued the Central Intelligence Agency in a groundbreaking challenge to domestic spying--and who would no doubt be proud of the Senate candidate's support of Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold's proposal to censure Bush for authorizing warrantless wiretaps. Lamont's father, Ted, an economist, helped administer the Marshall Plan after World War II and served with George Romney--Massachusetts Governor Mitt's liberal dad--in Richard Nixon's Department of Housing and Urban Development."

When Lamont offers his critique of "George Bush and Joe Lieberman's" foreign policies to the business owners who have gathered at the Indian restaurant in Stamford, several of whom make favorable references to "the House of Morgan," every head in the room nods. And when he quotes former Connecticut Senator Abe Ribicoff's Vietnam-era suggestion that America is strongest not when it brandishes arms but when it earns the respect of the world, the nodding heads are smiling. "This makes sense to me," says Pravin Banker, director of the Global Financial Network, who had introduced Lamont earlier in the evening. "It's refreshing to hear someone who knows about diplomacy, who recognizes that the US can do a better job of working with the world."

24. Could it possibly be that these are, indeed, actual reprobate
repukes? My pohllyannaish streak makes me want to believe that these were the real thing, fascist republican child molester types, leftovers from the great vote recount invasion of Florida 2000, that Lieberman would not stoop so low.
Nevertheless, it does point out just who is most interested (besides NoMoJo, himself) in keeping him in office.

Could it be a triple cross? Wherein the real object is to undermine Lieberman by such repulsive actions: I mean, nobody but a republican would actually think such an action would hurt Lamont or endear anyone to NoMoJo.

Subject: Unconventional Primary Campaign Opportunity (LIEBERMAN)

Republicans,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. In June, I informed you all of a campaign opportunity for State Senator Tom Kean race for U.S. Senate in NJ. Continuing the tradition of letting you about summer campaign opportunities here is a much more unconventional option:

Incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman (Democratic Primary)
Lieberman is facing a tough primary fight versus far-left anti war activist Ned Lamont.
----------------------------------------------------------------
August 4-9th Primary Campaigning:

Elissa Harwood '09 (NOT A CLUB MEMBER) has organized a series of buses departing on Friday August 4 from Washington DC (6:30 Foggy Bottom Metro) and NYC, destination: Hartford, CT

People interested in campaigning for Lieberman in the Democratic Primary will have lodging accommodations paid for (by his campaign), as well as food and transportation.

Buses would bring you back on August 9th.

If Interested, E-mail: XXX@Princeton.EDU or call her

30. Some of the blogs are discussing this and
quite a few believe that some of the main Lieberman staffers will show up with "black eyes" tomorrow and blame the whole ugly mess on Lamont staffers, saying they were attacked first. They say this scenario is right out of the rove playbook, right on schedule. My my, you take a fine, Progressive person like Lamont and really baptize him into politics don't you? At least you do in the political times of karl rove.

Lieberman is as much a Democrat as Zell Miller is make no mistake.. That is in name only. The GOP needs Lieberman and not Lamont who will deffanlty not vote or support Bush and the GOP..

In short, he's completely out of touch with the people he's supposed to be representing. And thoose people are ready to show him the door.

http://www.courant.com/news/nationworld/hc-sen0804.artaug04,0,7808175.story?coll=hc-headlines-nationworld

snip:

"At a campaign rally for Lamont at the Pratt & Whitney plant in Middletown Thursday, where supporters for Lieberman and Lamont tried to out-shout each other, the Rev. Jesse Jackson made the case.

"If you don't believe in the Democratic primary, don't run in it," Jackson said. "The party cannot afford to disintegrate over Lieberman's hedge politics."

Chanting "Hey, hey, ho, ho, Corporate Joe has got to go!" the union supporters for Lamont waved signs back and forth. About 10 Lieberman supporters across the street shouted, "Go, Joe, go!"

A supporter from each side got into a brief scuffle that involved the grabbing of a Lieberman sign, but no injuries were reported and no arrests were made."

I'll be real brief and then I'm moving on.

Jesse Jackson told us to focus and trust me, I'm trying my best but what happened yesterday was way over the line. I noticed a writer on another blog didn't notice any coverage of the event in the press. I felt that it was important to show him that this story did make it to the front page one major newspaper in the area. Other press were there and I'm sure more stories of what happened will surface as things really did get ugly.

Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 10:45 AM by catbert836
Until this campaign, I was able to respect his position as a conservative Democrat, not that I've agreed with much of what he thinks. But during this campaign, he's showed his true colors as a ruthless political animal, willing to do just about anything to keep his career afloat, from deserting his party of over 30 years to performing vicious character assassination on Lamont, whio has made it clear that he will support Liberman if he loses.

Rolling Stone had something right when they said that Liberman is just one of the many tired, compromising beaureaucrats that the Democratic Party trots out again and again on the premise they are "electable". It turns out the people, not the party, decides who's electable and who's not.
