Ode to Al Sharpton
He was on Hardball, debating the spokesman from the Lieberman campaign. Did anyone else see it?

The highlight for me was when they did the warm-up for the eulogy for Lieberman's career. He was this, he did that, and he had a good record on civil rights. Rev Al noted that he was raised looking up to Martin Luther King, Jr, and that although no recent politician had the record that LBJ had on civil rights, Martin said they had to oppose LBJ because of his stance on the war. And he noted Lieberman isn't LBJ on civil rights.

The Lieberman spokesperson wanted to discuss anything and everything but the war. Surely he must recognize how offensive that is to the citizens of their state. I recall Lieberman talking about having the "courage of his convictions" during the debate. His mouthpiece didn't show much courage.

I recommend watching the 7 pm edition if you missed Sharpton earlier this evening.

1. I thought his mouthpiece was going to puke!
I think he did after the MLK reference! I love Rev. Al!

2. Al was at his best.
I liked when he reminded the opponent that he had debated Lieberman numerous times, and was thus familiar with his positions on the issues.

And thanks for responding! This was my second thread today, and I thought that neither was going to be answered.

15. I like it.
Trying to get some good roses to cover it. One side is doing well; this one flowered early.

22. I can recommend a very good climber if you'd like,
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 12:41 AM by discerning christian
although I especially admire the two "pretty flowers" on either side of the rose!! Are they your girls? If you can find them, they are called "Zephrine Drauhne" (spelling might be a little off) They grow very fast, and profuse. It would cover the Arbor in less than two seasons! They are one of the only climbing roses that can bloom in partial shade as well as full sun. They are practically thorn less, and have the strong scent of an old fashioned English rose. Their color is a very rich rosy pink. They bloom twice for me here in Northwestern Ct. Should do as well in upstate NY. I'm sorry to say that I missed Al Sharpton today. His name suits him tho', cause he's the sharpest, quickest witted, fast on the comeback person I've ever heard speak. I have heard him on the local news here the past few days, since he came to Ct. to stump for Lamont, as well as my choice for Gov. John DeStefano. Rosa DeLauro has been supporting them both as well. She's my GAL, used to be my Rep. when I lived in New haven County. (PS the only place I've been able to find this rose is from Jackson Perkins. This is my second time planting one. I had to leave one behind when I moved here from down state.) DC

23. Thanks!
I've looked through a couple of my books, and can't locate it. But the Ortho Books Complete Guide to Roses (new edition) lists a number of American Rose Society-endorsed resources, and I shall have a couple Zephrine Drauhne's for next year .... unless I can get them for fall planting. (Jackson - Perkins is listed!)

It's interesting to note that both Sharpton and RFK Jr are coming into their primes during this strange phase of our nation's history. While I do not encourage personality cults, so to speak, I do recognize that we are at a point where we need strong leadership. Sharpton can bring a group of unrepresented people into the mix -- people that few, if any, other national leaders can today -- and Robert can deliver a message that reaches across party lines.

And yes, those are my daughters. My boys plant my roses every year, and now my daughters are my helpers when it comes to watering and weeding.

31. Beautiful !!
You are so fortunate to have the help of your children, for what ever reason you can't tend to them yourself! I am not able to get out and do the gardening I used to because of my arthritic back and COPD. I do a little at a time, and only on cooler days without humidity. You should see my small patch of lawn in my fenced in yard!! I must tend to it this weekend. My kids are all grown, with yards of their own to tend. Wish they were still around to help me. Yes Al and Joe are here when we need them. It's like we've come full circle, back to the late 60's and 70's. I'm glad we have them to "SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER" !! They still have a message to give to America! Oh,....one other thing, Jackson Perkins will only ship the roses for Spring planting but,....I had many blooms and growth the same summer, so it's worth waiting. DC

13. I must have missed you earlier today. I watched it at 5:00
and just had to watch it again with my husband. I love that the guy never answered the Iraq question. I am taking Tuesday off to work for Lamont and maybe will even get the nerve up to make phone calls this weekend. If you haven't already, check out Colin McEnroe's blog

http://blogs.courant.com/colin_mcenroe_to_wit/

He does a drive time radio show in Hartford and I think he has had a lot to do with Lamont's success.
My favorite quote today is in response to the Quinnipiac poll:

"If Lieberman were any more completely toast, people would be chasing him down the street with jars of Smucker's preserves"

16. There is some
hostility on the part of the Lieberman supporters. They do not respect the voters. They do not really believe in the democratic process. Even more than the war, that is the most important reason to defeat this neoconservative.

Al Sharpton has matured, and is in his prime. No one really wants to debate him. He took that man apart.

7. Lieberman's campaign person uses Republican tactics.
Sounded just like Mehlman or Rove smearing and not addressing the issues.

He has been schooled by weasals like Mehlman and Rove. Funny how hard his people are fighting this time. Too bad he didn't fight Cheney this way.

28. True, but as long as the Republican party lends its support to
these policies, I'll be happy to hang the label on the party. However, if there are members in the GOP who would be willing to outright denounce the neocons and not just rationalize how they got to that point, I'll be happy to refer to them as conservatives. Until the neocons are rooted out of that party, the party should wear the neocon label.

19. The attorney
representing the serviceman. It was interesting that the day the suit was announced, the military itself knocked the wind out of it. That's why the attorney is hoping to be able to call it off. They made a mistake. One might like or dislike Murtha, but they should know he is a tough man, and he knows what he is talking about when it comes to the military.

12. Did you hear Matthews trash him last week on Imus?
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 06:57 PM by KoKo01
He said: "Dontcha think if Al had a "better education" (exact quote) he'd be a good voice out there?...I love the guy."

In other words "Matthews and his crowd" only look for "Degrees" and "accepted colleges" before they they can accept anything one says.

So..Matthews admitted he gave "low life, uneducated Sharpton" space on his show to bring "Truth to Power" but Matthews understands that Sharpton has "baggage" and no education that a "Think Tank" member would accept or Matthews HIMSELF so he makes a comment that SHARPTON IS GREAT AS A DEM SPOKESPERSON...but "Oh Dear!" he just didn't graduate from "Loyola, Georgetown or U. MASS!"

Matthews "wringing hands" and falling all over himself about "WHY" Sharpton is SO GOOD he has to have him on his show...sort of shows his "BIAS/PREDJUDICE" wouldn't one have reason to believe?

When Matthews needs a ratings bump amonst African-Americans and Lefty Liberals...he and Producers (probably in inverse order) bring out "Revere nd Al" and then the diss him because he's NOT ONE OF THEM! Reverend Al ...has NO EDUCATION that THEY could ACCEPT!

It's really disgusting...I guess it's only us "Media Mavens" who can stand wading through the Hypocracy!"

20. It Was A Beautiful Thing To See
He had the Lieberman spokesman on the ropes. Also, I don't know if it was my reception but the Lieberman guy looked very grey. I took it as a bad omen.

Yes there are people on DU who are delighting in trashing Lamont. What will all the neos do if Rovian tactics are beginning to fail? Now his supporters in the state are acting like thugs.

That message gets LOST when we have floaters like Lieberman confusing folks about where we stand.
