Just got a call. NYC business has been told to shut down all non-essential computer servers in anticipation of a big powercut. Presumably heat wave related....

Seems odd.. but calling all NYC Duers to tell us what's going on.. untill your computers go down in a heap.

Our entire building has been under orders to cut all non-essential use of power for several days now. I imagine that's true throughout the city. rolling outages would be the next step.

Emergency in NY as city swelters
A heat emergency is in place in New York City, as high temperatures grip the east of the United States for a second day.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has urged residents to conserve energy to avoid the blackouts experienced last month.

Across the city, 383 "cooling centres" have been opened, and public pools opened for extended hours.

The heatwave, which has been moving across the US from California, is also affecting Philadelphia and Washington.

Temperatures have cooled in California, where the record 15-day heat wave was blamed for 136 deaths and widespread power cuts.

Dodging the heat

Philadelphia, New York City and Washington DC saw maximum temperatures of 38C (100F) on Wednesday.

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (Reuters) - The New York power grid should hold up during what could be record power demand on Tuesday and Wednesday, the New York Independent System Operator said on Monday.

"We are predicting a record for Tuesday and then again on Wednesday," said Jim Smith of the NY ISO, the grid's operator, adding, "There is enough power in New York."

There were no major problems as a heat wave entered the state of New York on Monday, and the record power demand resulting from high air conditioning use on Tuesday and Wednesday should strain but not break the power grid, Smith said.

The New York ISO operates the power grid for the state and the eight utilities in it. The biggest of these utilities is Consolidated Edison Inc. (ED.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and its 3.2 million customers, which on Monday said it was expecting record power demand Tuesday and Wednesday.

Someone forwarded me an e-mail at work saying the same thing. 3 hours ago. I made it home with no problems on the subway other than it being a thousand degrees in the stations.

This is all shit, homeland protection? They can't even keep the power grid up!!! This is what I've been talking about - our infrastructure will get worse if the BFEE is not stopped. The 'terrorists' will be able to cross our borders on horse with big signs saying, "HI HERE I AM!!!" but no one will see them...to dark without lights. :eyes:

Here in Philly there hasn't even been a request to draw down. We're handling this extremely well.

20. Our company got that message the day before yesterday.

Our firm (in the financial district) was asked to shut down one elevator per bank plus all escalators, and to dial back on the A/C during peak hours, and we employees have been asked to turn off electric gear we are not using. Decorative lights on the bridges have been out all week -- at least they have been on the George Washington. The elevator in my apartment building is turned off tonight, but it's a pretty cranky old guy anyway.

The lights on the GW were back on this evening tho.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. Since the privatization of ConEd, hasn't the Holy Market taken just dandy care of us? Provided us excellent service and efficiency?
