IRAQ: Shi'ite and sunnis shelter each other - Bad news for Bush's puppets

BAGHDAD, 3 August (IRIN) - Hanan Muhammad is from a very conservative Sunni family, and she and her four children live in a predominantly Sunni neighbourhood of Baghdad. But as sectarian violence rages across Iraq, Muhammad is sheltering her Shi'ite neighbours in her home.

"We have lived beside each other for years, and now because of this ridiculous sectarian violence, other people want them to leave our Sunni neighbourhood," Muhammad said. "But they do not have anywhere to go. So I'll help them, giving them my home, food and friendship as much as necessary."

Hundreds of Iraqis who oppose the ongoing sectarian violence have found ways to help each other, according to a spokesman for the Baghdad-based Iraq Aid Association (IAA).

"Some families shelter their neighbours, others give aid assistance like food supplies for those displaced, and even doctors offer their services for free as a way to help those innocent victims of the ongoing violence," said Fatah Ahmed, spokesman for IAA.

Hanan Muhammad has harboured her neighbours for nearly two months. Their children do not go to school and the parents quit their jobs because threats at their workplaces and in the neighbourhood have become so frequent they cannot leave Muhammad's residence. Muhammad, a widow, is their sole means of support.


Negropontes death squads have given it their best shot trying to instigate a civil war but I don't think the Iraqi people are going to fall for it.

went to school, and were neighbors. Iraq was not bad in all places, all of the time. Even sudam recognized that ruling by religion wouldn't work in his country.

lose the mid-term elections, and have the Democrats form the government. So when Bush leaves office in 2007 (or does he continue to serve his term even if the Republicans lose?) and he gets tried for war crimes.

Worked good in South America too.

It did not work so good in Vietnam.

Its an old strategy called divide and conquer.

6. But did it work well in Central America?

Didn't the turmoil end there when the Cold War ended? Mass murder of innocents in El Salvidor, Guatemala, Nicaragua didn't do anything but rake up a high body count.

In Latin America the juntas were doing the killing, there wasn't much of a divide and conquer policy. And at least throwing trade unionists and communist agitators out of helicopters and feeding them to the sharks (not that I condone that) was focusing on select individuals. Besides, most of the juntas were gone by the mid-1980s replaced by democratically elected governments.

I've found US foreign policy to have historically encouraged unity and stability: European cooperation, Germany reunification, territorial integrity of the USSR up until its breakup.........

5. Great post! I'd like to see more posts and news of how the REAL people of

Iraq, the U.S. and other places are coping with U.S.-based global corporate predators and their associated war profiteers, death squads, torture chambers and massive thievery and environmental destruction.

Latin America is a good case in point. The people there seem to have overcome decades, centuries, of the most brutal oppression--and are now creating what only be called a renaissance of democracy--a vast, peaceful, democratic, leftist (majorityist) revolution has swept the continent--in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela, with a strong democracy movement also in Peru, and gaining momentum even in Columbia (and also with amazing things happening in Mexico and Nicaragua). A key element of this revolution has been TRANSPARENT elections (U.S. voters, take note!)--the result of the long hard work of the OAS, the Carter Center, EU groups and local civic groups). But I can't help but think that ANOTHER maybe even more important element of it is simple kindness--as described in this post--the goodness and generosity and tolerance of the vast majority of people, who can see very well what fairness is, what equity is, and how human beings should be treated. We al have to figure out--each in our own societies--how to throw off the war profiteers, to strip them of their power, and get on with helping each other and saving the planet.

We Americans have a special responsibility to do this--since our government and its corporate masters are causing the lion's share of the problems. But we are also the greatest victims of both propaganda and disempowerment by means of a fraudulent election system (--now directly controlled by Bushite corporations using TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code in the new electronic systems). The bad guys cannot afford to count our votes accurately. They would be long ago out of power. How do we regain our sovereignty--our right to vote--so that we can get on with restoring the qualities in our government that reflect the qualities of most Americans: tolerance, generosity, lawfulness, creativity, belief in education, belief in human progress, belief in giving everyone a fair shake and playing by the rules?

I was greatly moved by the outpouring--and ingenuity!--of so many Americans in response to Katrina. THAT'S us. Not these dreadful criminals who have seized our government. We are SO LIKE that Iraqi woman--Hanan Muhammad. THAT's what most of us would do in a similar situation. I strongly identify with it. Our core values are the same. And THAT's what good government is based on--core human values--and why peace and justice are possible, and CAN be achieved. It's what most people want.

My plan on stolen elections is for citizen rebellion NOW, by means of massive Absentee Voting this fall. Flood the system with MOUNTAINS of AB votes and FORCE change. It won't result in accurate counts in November, but, if it's big enough, it can and will cause panic in the election theft industry--among corrupt election officials and the criminal voting machine corporations--and CREATE THE CONDITIONS for change. Let all that expensive election theft machinery sit idle! Boycott the machines! And once we start un-rigging the election system, we're going to see some amazing and wonderful things happen: a renaissance of democracy here in the north!
