Petition for an immediate ceasefire from: Act For Change
Please help stop the killing!

ACTFORCHANGE ACTIVISM UPDATE: August 3, 2006

URGENT ALERT

Support an Immediate Cease-Fire in Lebanon

A small but growing number of representatives are supporting House
Concurrent Resolution 450, calling for an immediate end to the
violence in Lebanon and negotiation of a settlement to be enforced by
international peacekeepers. This resolution is the best hope for an
end to the rapidly rising civilian toll in this deeply troubled
region, and should be approved in Congress.

Click here to ask your representative to support H.C.R. 450:

The United States bears a special moral responsibility in this crisis
as the only nation that can bring an end to the violence and relieve
the humanitarian catastrophe. The current policy of delay only leads
to more unnecessary civilian deaths in both Lebanon and Israel.

Ongoing conflict in Lebanon is also likely to have great consequences
for the region, the world and the safety of our nation and its allies.
Congress needs to step forward and call for an immediate cessation of
hostilities by passing H.C.R. 450.

*** Please forward this email to everyone you know -- friends, family,
and colleagues -- who is interested in seeing an end to the bloodshed
in Lebanon. ***

2. ALSO SIGN THIS PETITION from TRUE MAJORITY
Support a Middle East ceasefire
The situation in Israel and Lebanon is a tragedy. Despite the complexities, some members of Congress from both parties have found a way to speak out and push our government to work harder to stop the bloodshed.

This is no time to remain on the sidelines. Your representative should get behind at least one of the four different Congressional resolutions pushing for an end to the deaths of civilians and children on all sides.

Tell me more
Subject:

Dear < Representative >,

(Edit Letter Below)

I'm horrified at the number of civilians, especially children, dying in the attacks along the Israel-Lebanon border. I know that this is a complicated situation with a long history, but this has to stop -- and our country has the ability to broker a ceasefire.

I also know that your colleagues in the House of Representatives have come up with at least four different resolutions urging the Administration to work harder to end the killing: House Concurrent Resolution 450, House Resolution 955, House Resolution 954 and House Resolution 945. It appears that so far you aren't listed as a co-sponsor of any of them.

Please step up and join the efforts to push for a quick end of the killing of children and civilians on all sides.
Sincerely,

I'm not sure how much our arguments count against lobbyists money. But, if enough people get active in the political process, we can change the system.

Crisis in the Middle East: Stop Shooting and Start Talking

"The sickening slaughter on both sides must end now... President Bush must call for an immediate cease-fire. This madness must stop."
Sen. Chuck Hagel (NE)

The escalating violence between Israel and her neighbors is engulfing the entire region in the worst crisis in years. The victims of this fighting are mostly civilian as Hezbollah rockets and Israel bombs from above and ground troops push the fighting further into southern Lebanon and Gaza. This latest cycle of violent attacks and reprisals in Gaza, Lebanon, and Israel is the best evidence that war is not the answer and that what is needed is a cease-fire and peacebuilding. Peace is possible.

The history and reasons for the current crisis did not begin with the capture of an Israeli soldier nor with the firing of Qassam rockets, as several current and former government officials have said. The Bush administration’s problem-definition is that bad people – "terrorists" – are killing good people. The solution is for good people to kill the bad people first. Military force which cannot solve the political problems that are the root cause of these repeating cycles of attacks and reprisals, nor can military force eliminate one or more parities to the conflict and impose a unilateral peace. In short, smart diplomacy – not smart bombs – is needed now and in the coming years to guide a sustained peacebuilding project.

The United States, acting in concert with the international community, must work to achieve an immediate cease-fire and to launch an intensive diplomatic initiative for the cessation of hostilities. The U.S. should also stop shipping precision-guided bombs to Israel.

Take ActionU.S. leadership is critically needed now to call for an immediate cease-fire on all sides of this conflict. Please call members of Congress and the president. Urge them to work with the international community to get an immediate cease-fire, to open all channels possible to provide humanitarian aid, to initiate intensive diplomatic for cessation of hostilities, , and, then, to address the root causes of this latest outbreak of violence.

10. *** ALSO *** ... DEMOCRACY IN ACTION PETITION:
Lebanon
The UN Security Council is supposed to act to stop crimes against peace, but cannot do so in this case because it is paralyzed by the veto of the Bush Administration, backed by Britain. However, under Resolution 377, "Uniting for Peace," the UN General Assembly can act when the Security Council fails to do so (see Brecher/Smith, "A Road to Peace in Lebanon?")

Please join us in signing and circulating the following petition, calling for the UN General Assembly to act. Movement towards the convening of the General Assembly to consider an immediate cease-fire will put significant pressure on the United States.

TAKE ACTION:

12. More on the General Assembly move:
) Iran, Other Islamic States May Call for UN Meeting

Bloomberg

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601085&sid=aUPZZwugopYo&refer=europe#
Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and 15 other states said they will call for a meeting of the UN General Assembly to achieve a cease-fire in the Middle East should the UN Security Council fail to end hostilities immediately. The UN Security Council should enforce an "unconditional'' cease-fire without delay, the Organization of Islamic Conference said today in a statement after meeting in Malaysia. The group said OIC countries should cooperate with UN members to support a General Assembly meeting in the absence of instant measures to end the fighting. "We strongly condemn the relentless Israeli aggression against Lebanon,'' the group said. "We express our concern at the inability of the UN Security Council to take the necessary actions for a cease-fire.'' The OIC meeting, convened by Malaysia, is the largest gathering of Muslim nations since war broke out in Lebanon last month.

There just HAS to come a time on this poor planet when the bulk of humans are going to stand up scream "STOP!"

Why should the few remain empowered to screw up the lives of the many?
