GOP Challenger: Murtha Wrong On Haditha &Target of Bribery Investigation
Opponent: Murtha wrong on Haditha, implied he'd take bribes

RAW STORY
Published: Thursday August 3, 2006

The GOP challenger to Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) has issued a statement attacking the incumbent for his statements regarding the Haditha masscare in Iraq--and using the occasion to condemn the Congressman for implying he may accept a bribe in a recorded 1980 conversation.

Diana Irey (right), a commissioner in Pennsylvania's Washington County, said Murtha was "wrong to say that Frank Wuterich and the Marines under his command 'killed innocent civilians in cold blood' before the first Marine was charged, before the first court-martial was convened, before the first soldier was convicted."

Murtha, a 16-term Congressman, is being sued by Wuterich for statements related to the massacre. Yesterday, the Associated Press reported that an investigation of the Haditha incident showed that statements made by Murtha were likely correct.

Irey went on to contend that Murtha should be more sensitive to the legal issues around the Haditha incident -- as he was the target of a bribery investigation in 1980. At the time, the FBI recorded Murtha declining a $50,000 bribe.

1. "Recorded declining a bribe."
No doubt that would have "conservatives" not voting for him. The "legal issues" about the Hadditha issue are guided by the UCMJ. I doubt very seriously that a civilian in Murtha's district will be sitting on any courts-martial for these Marines, so no potential juror would be swayed by any statements.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that murtha's opponent never served in the military. If she had she certianly would understand the sensitivities of the UCMJ.

2. It`s going to get very, very nasty
How low will they go? To hold on to the power the right has, I don`t think anything will be beneath them.

3. Murtha's comments while declining the bribe were pretty bad,
but he did decline. Also, it was 26 years ago and nothing has surfaced since. As we know the repubs are crawling through every dumpster he's ever passed looking to dig up dirt on this guy, I'd be willing to speculate that he never did "change his mind".

That Coulter in a funny hat woman, however, should be sued for slander and fined for wasting court time with her own baseless suit.
