***** CALL SENATORS NOW: MILLIONAIRE TAX CUT VOTE TONIGHT! *****
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 12:23 PM by Sapphire Blue
Email from the Coalition on Human Needs (http://chn.org/)...

CALL SENATORS NOW: MILLIONAIRE TAX CUT VOTE TONIGHT!

The Senate may vote on the bill slashing the estate tax as early as tonight (Thursday). Please call your Senators now to oppose this reckless plan.

Call toll-free: 800-459-1887. Call twice, to reach each senator, and tell them:

Vote No on H.R. 5970, the cynical ploy to slash the estate tax. Handing $750 billion over 10 years to a small number of multimillionaires will force cuts in health care, education and other vital investments for all. I support an increase in the minimum wage - but the cost of this reckless bill is far too high.

Why the Coalition on Human Needs believes this vote is critical:

We simply cannot afford to slash the taxes of a few* multimillionaires by $750 billion. Punching such a gaping hole in federal revenue will force more and more cuts in health care, education, nutrition, housing, and other investments.

This bill will massively deepen the deficit. That is another way of saying that we would borrow billions in money we do not have to pay people who do not need it, with the bill coming due to our children and grandchildren.

The cynical ploy to hitch the badly-needed minimum wage increase to the bill to gut the estate tax is deeply troubling to us. CHN wrote this to all senators:

The members of the Coalition on Human Needs have worked for years in support of an increase in the minimum wage. So we hope you will understand the depth of our opposition to the bill’s reason for being - the massive cut in the estate tax - that compels us to urge you to vote no. Millions of low-wage workers need an increase in the minimum wage. As you know, it has not risen since 1997. But the cost that this legislation exacts in return for the minimum wage increase is excessive. Since its cost will be paid in large part by these same workers, their children, and millions of other Americans who are far from rich, we do not hesitate to ask you to oppose this bill.

Thank you for calling! Please forward this request as widely as possible.

*Only 8,200 estates would owe any estate tax in 2011 if H.R. 5970 were adopted, each getting an extra tax break of $1.3 million in that year (on average). That is just a fraction of one percent of all estates.

The toll-free number is provided courtesy of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization whose work for social justice, peace, and humanitarian service includes campaigns for a moral budget and a fair minimum wage (www.afsc.org/economic-justice/). AFSC welcomes groups to circulate and use the toll-free number in support of non-partisan budget goals and without linking the alert to a website soliciting donations or actions which may be used to support partisan lobbying or work.

...then they can wait until November. Do not fall for the bullshit and do not go along with more breaks for the wealthy with the excuse that you are going to help the poor.

25. I sent this to Feingold and Kohl
I think Feingold will vote against it.. Kohl's a hard call with his bankruptcy bill support.
-----------

Dear Senator,

As much as I agree with the need to raise Minimum Wage in our country, I strongly urge you to vote against H.R. 5970. The Republicans are again abusing their power to try to earn political points with an election coming up and they are using their power to do this instead of actually helping the constituents they represent.

Who would benefit from this bill? The rich. Who else would the Republicans want to help? They target all the tax breaks to them and cut services to the poor when they need to make a cut or two to toss a bone to their fiscal conservative brethren.

This would be no different. The rich would make out like bandits (again) with the repeal of the Estate Tax and in order to make up the estimated hundreds of millions of dollars lost to our economy those same Republicans would be coming back to Congress with bills asking to cut even more social programs.

Sure we raised Minimum Wage but it doesn’t help when medical assistance or food stamps or child care tax breaks or even housing or energy assistance faces the chopping block.

Minimum Wage jobs already offer little to no benefits as it is and if you take away any and all help the Government can provide to the poor they might as well not work and be homeless because the result will be the same.

The wealthiest in this country are already living in financial gluttony thanks to the Bush Administration. No matter how the Republicans try to spin this in misleading advertisements vote against this bill!

Come back by pointing out what I just did…It’s easy and the American people are not stupid. Just as they have with flag burning and the recent gay marriage debate they will see through the deception and vote their conscience.

Which is apparently something your colleagues on the right side of the aisle do not have.
