Didn't our country learn anything from the build-up to the Iraq War?

Create a boogeyman, escalate an ongoing problem into a "crisis" and set it up so that war is the only solution.

Yee Haw! It's on to Tehran boys and girls! We'll show them damn Iranians who's boss. And the Iranian people will embrace us as liberators. Democracy and peace will flourish in the Middle East as a result.

As Yogi Berra said: "It's like deja vu all over again."

1. Again, there is not near the "cannon fodder" to pull it off ...
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 11:40 AM by ShortnFiery
The best Chimpy can do is do a few air strikes. That's bad enough but those of us who have ZERO ties to anything connected with the Middle East are not going to trip over each other racing to to go kill and die for people we have NOTHING in common with (either side).

There won't be enough troops to even consider an invasion of Syria. Ain't gonna happen because it's logistically impossible. ;)

2. Logistically impossible? When did that ever stop them?
Iraq was logistically impossible. Didn't stop us from trying that one.

And the invasion will not be Syria (unless it's an intermediate step). It's Iran that we've made into the boogeyman who must be stopped by an invasion.

3. Logistically impossible?
Of course. No sane military commander would attempt to fight on yet another front now, even if there were legitimate reasons for a fight. I believe a far more sinister invasion is the eventual goal of BushCo and the Cheney-Cartel.

Invade Iran, or Syria, or whoever, and when the whole world begins to unravel into both military and economic chaos, Cowboy will be directed from above to declare martial law. No more elections, since Himself will declare the need to safeguard us even more, and of course congress will be required to pass the Patriotic Participation Act (conscription into the Army of Freedom)and all the cannon fodder the neocons want can be simply hauled out of the houses of America in the middle of the night.

It is the complete "invasion" of our own country, aside from the oil and power driven greed, that seems likely to be the ultimate goal.

4. I wouldn't go that far....But that could well be the result
I doubt they deliberatly want to impose such a defacto coup. But that would likely be the result.

You can't have an Empire without breaking a few eggs.

5. Oh ye of little faith ...
I know in my heart (and from being a child of the 70s) they will NOT pull it off. I have much more faith in The American People. When we're backed into a corner, we'll fight.

6. I usually agree -- But current evidence is the opposite
We're already backed into a corner. But we're once again letting the Neo-cons weave their spell and repeating the same pattern of the Iraq War buildup.

7. OK, a nasty bombing campaign, sure
However, there are NOT adequate ground troops to pull off any type of invasion. An invasion is NOT a possibility without a DRAFT.

9. Bingo!...A draft
I would not be surprised if at some point these jokers get us backed into such a dangerous corner that they will impose a draft on the grounds of national security.

And I fear the piblic and politicians will respond in the same way as in the past six years. Some people will be upset and try to stop it, but the elites and the sheeple demographic will just go along with it.

10. that what seems to be percolating in my thoughts lately...
the intended invasion is really of the US and western democracy - whatever's left of it. The signs are all there, bright and eye burning.

12. Baby George says:

And whatever George says he wants so dearly, he gets. Men in uniform obeying an imbecile's every word, in times when their job should be to putsch him out of the White House for restoring sanity.

We will never learn, it appears. We can hope for an Age of Enlightenment, I guess?

14. To be honest I hope for an age
where the the dominating species on Earth are plants. I'd like to get reincarnated as a tree, standing in the sunshine, moderate temperatures, a lake at my feet.
Consciousness? Forget it. Nature tried it once, and it almost destroyed the planet. So from an evolutionary point of view, consciousness has turned out to be a bad idea not to be repeated.
