State Department Condemns Rice Cartoons

And they had this to say about the cartoon,

“We encourage development of a free press but along with those freedoms come certain responsibilities,” a State Department spokesman told the Times. “Secretary Rice is focused on doing her job. She knows that the United States is doing the right thing.”

But this is what the State Department said about the cartoons of Allah a few months back,

“While we share the offense that Muslims have taken at these images, we at the same time vigorously defend the right of individuals to express points of view . . . Freedom of expression is at the core of our democracy, and it is something that we have shed blood and treasure around the world to defend, and we will continue to do so,”

I guess it’s only freedom of the press when you’re making fun of the other guy.

13. I think so, too:
It's all fun and such until you draw the SecState as being "hippy." Cross that line, and Bolton's after ya (and you know that stink don't wash off.)

4. So the thing to say is...
“While we share the offense that (neo-cons and other Repubublicans) have taken at these images, we at the same time vigorously defend the right of individuals to express points of view . . . Freedom of expression is at the core of our democracy, and it is something that we have shed blood and treasure around the world to defend, and we will continue to do so,”

There, that should do it. :hi:

8. This is what it says in Arabic
"Rice speaks about the birth of a new Middle East," in reference to the secretary's recent remarks about the "birth pangs" of the region."

It's in the link to the article from the original post. Sorry, should have included it.

15. On a scale of 1-10, I rate the offensiveness of the cartoon at 4.5
That's worthy of rolling your eyeballs at it and releasing a deep sigh.

Anything under an offensiveness level of 8 is not worthy of a press release.

16. poor Condi - she's a mess. She's in way over her head
she's certainly no expert in diplomacy, the middle east, democracies, the political system, makeup, or even the proper use of Pink Lady No Lye Relaxer.

She can't fix any of those things, so of course a little cartoon is something she can "focus on". She just continues to prove that she was promoted several levels above her competence.

21. "We encourage development of a free press. . .
. . . but along with those freedoms come certain responsibilities." Hmmm! What's wrong with this statement.

Well, first there is no precondition to a press being free. It's either free or it isn't. If it is truly free, and there are no conditions, then there are no "certain responsibilities."

Secondly, if you believe that these conditions must exist, then you DON'T encourage the development of a free press.

So, the State Dept. is both stupid and they lied.

26. Just ran across this biblical quote: Thessalonians
While people are saying, 'Peace and safety,' destruction will come on them suddenly, as labour pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape ... Thessalonians 5:3

Still on their State-sponsored road to Armegeddon, and can't --or don't care to-- hide their metaphors :puke:

With everything going on in the world right now,
why is ANYONE at State wasting precious time issuing
