Damn, that was the first one I have ever experienced.

Damn.

We just had a call from SF and it happened there, too.

If Republicans are in power when it hits, California is screwed like Louisiana and Mississippi were screwed, except Republicans would be even more gleeful as they watch the "left coast" burn and crumble.

10. Light candles???
I didn't think you were supposed to light matches or lighters or anything like that after a big earthquake because if a natural gas pipe is damaged, the entire street will go up.

13. Candles are safer than lamps with oil.
Once the earthquakes die down and you start running out of batteries on your flashlights and lamps, candles are handy to have until the P.G & E. get electricity going again. I have a bunch of flashlight types of lamps that I keep for electric outtages and they work for earthquakes too. I also have candles when there are no more batteries working. Worked really good for me in the last earthquake we had a few years back.

Not sure how well they work, But, it always seemed a practicle thing for an emergency kit. I think they have similar hand cranked deals with bulit in radios as well. Good combo.

Don't cost too much, and if there's a "big one" you'll have light and access to information for as long as it takes.

25. Well, if you stick around the Bay Area for long...
I'm sure there will be more. :)

I grew up in SoCal, so I'm quite used to them. There's only been one earthquake that scared me. The Landers / Big Bear quake in 1992 was incredibly powerful. Shook the snot out of my apartment. The pool sloshed out about a foot or so of water. My fishtank lost about 4 inches or so of water, but thankfully didn't fall over. Then a few hours later we had the huge aftershock. Only reason more people don't know about that quake was that, thankfully it was centered pretty far from major habitation. My town, Riverside (blech) was one of the closest large cities.

56. I remember the landers quake--woke to the first one, thought I had been
dreaming, turned on the tv--nothing. called the dispatch desk to ask if we had had an earthquake, went back to sleep. woke just before the second one and thought about friends getting married that day, thinking "if You didn't want them to get married, wouldn't a simple NO have been sufficient"?

listening to all the talk of a potential "big one" realized that my emergency stock contained less than half a case of wine!!! forunately, since it was SoCal, was able to rectify that small oversight immediately.

have felt a number of tremors and quakes in my years, including a couple in colorado (many people don't realize there is a fault line running under cheyenne mountain)

was born and raised in California, though, so I've felt many. I've got to say that this one was a pretty good one - have you checked the ABAG site? Here's the reading on my nearby seismogram....

http://quake.usgs.gov/waveforms/helicorder/CPI_VDZ_NC_--_00_22221212.html

I was doing a reasonable impersonation of the dog across the street, wagging it's whole body, right when the earthquake hit, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me why the china cabinet was rattling and the floors creaking and the walls popping. I was completely baffled until my hubby started laughing his head off!

But then one of them is a Golden Retriever who doesn't get excited about much and one is a psycho-killer Tuxedo cat who was probably thinking about all the prey the quake would flush and is probably, therefore, greatly disappointed.

45. Make sure to have a Quake Pack ready
I used to live in SF and made it through a few tremors...some mushy, some sharp, some rolling... Make sure you have a pack ready just in case...

From a Canadian site:

First aid kit and instruction booklet.

Shelter- a plastic tarp, a small tent, emergency ("space") blankets, or even some large garbage bags.

Water- at least four litres of water per person, per day, in tight-lidded non-breakable containers. That's at least 12 litres per person for a three-day supply.

Keep a supply of water purification tablets in your emergency kit. Water also can be made safe to drink by using four drops of liquid household bleach in 41/2 litres of clear water or 10 drops in 41/2 litres of cloudy water. Replace stored tap water at least every six months.

If the water is still running, fill a bathtub and other containers. Remember, there's water available too in a hot water tank and toilet reservoir.

Food- keep a suply of non-perishable food handy, such as canned and dehydrated food, dried fruit and canned juices. Rotate periodically to keem them fresh. Remember a manual can opener.

Flashlight and spare batteries. Keep the flashlight near your bed. Batteries should be separate in your kit.

Battery AM/FM radio and spare batteries, stored seperately in waterproof bags.

Essential medication and supplies for infants, elderly persons and those with special needs. Keep at least a one-week supply in your emergency kit. Include copies of prescriptions for your medicine and glasses.

Personal toiletry items- toilet tissue, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.

Class ABC fire extinguisher. Keep it in a handy location in your home, after testing according to directions.

Wrench (crescent or pipe) to turn off natural gas. Keep it in a handy place or in your emergency kit.

Shoes- heavy enough to protect from broken glass and other debris. Keep them handy, wherever you are.

Other items you may wish to include:

gloves, outdoor/winter clothing

waterproof matches and candles- but don't use them if there are gas leaks or spilled flammable liquids

money, including coins (25 cents) for telephones, because banks and credit cards may not be usable

a sleeping bag for each member of your family

garbage bags

a portable toilet

rope, heavy tape

a crowbar or prybar

a gasoline generator and a rated extension cord

earthquake buddies for children (eg: stuffed animal, doll game)

evacuation pack for each person (see below)

vehicle pack for each vehicle (see below)

office pack (see below)

Evacuation pack

The items in this list are in addition to the supplies in your home emergency kit. They should be kept in a separate pack (eg., in a tote bag) which each person would take individually if you have to evacuate.

Remember packs for small children, the elderly, the handicapped in your home. The evacuation pack should be stored in a secure place with your other emergency supplies.

food- dehydrated, dried fruit, high-energy bars, etc- enough for 72 hours

first aid kit and booklets

survival manual

flashlight and batteries

money, including coins

photographs of your family, friends

gloves and other warm clothing
