This is VERY strange! Thunderstorm line approaching NY from Canada
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 09:16 PM by Cooley Hurd

:wow: I cannot recall EVER seeing such a defined line of storms in the northeast!!!

On edit: the images are updated automatically, and right now (10:08 ET) it's not quite as defined a line it was when I first posted it.

Heat wave?
I bet it's that high-pressure cell of hellfire heat that's creating that effect. Right below that well-defined storm line is 100+ degree temperatures. Global warming is REAL; we'd better get used to summers like this.

1. It's called global warming.
and yes, it is actually here. It is worse than people predicted, and someday soon the dumb shits who denied it will be shown wrong, unfortunately. I wish we didn't have to deal with it, but we do.

2. Is it coming to NY or is it sliding over the top of us?
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 09:02 PM by SmokingJacket
I've never, ever seen weather come down from the north. My first thought on seeing that was, too bad it's going to miss us (though it might get the Lake Ontario region and north).

Because we would certainly enjoy a storm about now.

6. The doppler loop shows it's sliding to the southeast...
...we (in Saratoga County) are under a severe thunderstorm watch. :(

18. I am in Minnesota and we often get cold weather from Canada. I
wonder if the changing climate may be pushing our weather patterns your way, more snow, more cold, etc.

Woohoo! It's going to bring temps all the way down to 85!
And this IS an improvement, although still too hot, it'll be more normal for August.

30. Checking in from Detroit...
...where the temps have been 90 - 100 with very high humidity (70s - 80s) the past several days. DH says it just hit 85 degrees w/ 60% humidity outside. I think am going to go sit on the porch just to see if I can still breathe.

Garden report says my cucumbers, squash, peppers and tomatoes loved the heat, but me? Not so much. :-)

4. Wow.
I got caught in a very violent thunderstorm today in northern Vt, and last night was pretty intense too, but then again, some years ago, I experienced a tornado here.

24. Very true...
I could see it moving in as I drove home from work, and it was a strong line moving in. Looking at it, I knew there would be some big storms.

Except it feels so damn good after 5 consecutive days in the upper 90s!!!

7. We must be getting ready to rapture because we've had many
BALMY days out here by the beach in SF. *Many*, not a few and not *that one week a year* where you can wear beach clothes. It's been beautiful and unnerving at the same time!

29. I found a tick in the livingroom yesterday that must have appeared
by Divine Intervention because we have no "outdoor" pets here. Or, woods or even low chaparral for that matter.

:wtf:

You like cultural anthro. What is that bug we're thinking of? A beetle? And Egyptian something? a scarab? Is that a word?

lol

10. will be cooler...
It looks like maybe the line of storms is where a hot and cold front meet, maybe? I know on the other side of those storms here in MI it's a lot cooler than it was. Feels pretty good, too. :)

Of course, our weather during the summer time can feel very sub-tropical if not tropical in feel here on the coast. You can plant palm trees here, and they will continue to grow, not die.

Gallows humor, I guess. Did you notice that it looks like a dragon? It should cross the lake pretty fast - the severe thunder storm warning is due to expire at 2AM EDT. It's 10PM EDT now.

25. You remembered! I'm blushing!
Oddly enough, most of these storms have spilt west to east so the top half nails Oswego and the bottom half nails Baldwinsville. Oswego got a gully washer last Saturday at the height of Harbor Fest and we got nothing! The river has been running high since Spring. It actually throws up a wall of mist at the falls.

31. not to this degree, but monday night, we had storms moving in from east
of us, which is quite unusual--the atmosphere felt very odd, very oppressive. and it moved fast and hard, too, also a bit unusual.

35. Here's a good loop to watch... everything in one shot.
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/natl/loop-wv.html

...or if your browser can't handle the loop, here's the still:

(That's TS Chris taking a surprise turn towards Puerto Rico, BTW.)

We had quite the 5-minute gale here in Western MA when one of these stroms dipped down
far enough to hit us today. Branches falling everywhere, some power blips, probably some flash flooding in places. Luckily I was watching this loop and saw it coming and was mentally prepared to get all those windows closed pretty damn fast. If you're in the dark area and see an edge of red jutting out and ready to hit you, get ready they are damn strong.

36. That's a great web site.
Thanks for posting it. By the way, the storm came through last night and lasted about 15 or 20 minutes. It wasn't much here, some lightning , a lot of rain and no wind BUT lightning must have hit the power lines here. We heard a loud twang followed by a nearby boom and I saw sparks flying across my driveway. I figured the transformer across the street had taken a direct hit and exploded. I called National Grid and they came out to check it out. There is no sign that anything happened. If I didn't have my three kids as witnesses I wouldn't be certain the event happened at all.
