Simple question: Aren't we bringing down productivity numbers?
Think about how many hours we spend here, often during our regular jobs. It must have an impact on productivity... :)

4. Maybe fully self-employed?
Or retired?

Or disabled?

Or ill?

Or maybe DU is their job?

I know when I last worked in the corporate world that every keystroke on my computer was logged and every phone call was recorded. And that was fully disclosed and for my protection. No way would I have dared to post to DU during work hours.

7. B + C = D
Your last sentence is certainly God's truth. I had to account for every minute away from my computer, over 15 minutes of "personal time" a week was reason for a managerial counseling three managerial counseling was cause for dismissal. Personal time was for things like going to the restroom. It was a huge building, it would easily take five minutes simply to walk to and from the restroom.

10. I have sworn to never, ever work in a cubicle again.
and to never work in a business with more than ten employees. Never wear a tie again to work, well maybe once in a while, but not every day. I never had what it took for the corporate world, not willing to play the political thing enough. kissing up, kicking down (thanks Carl Ford) just amazing how competence is not necessarily the key to success. I guess the present group in charge demonstrates this, they are masters of what I am describing, how many more competent people do you imagine they have left destroyed in their wake? Ruined personally, professionally and most importantly, psychologically?

11. Completely agree with you.
And yet, why isn't there a National League of Competent and Honest People?

Seriously, need to fight back...

3. Maybe it is sharpening our brains
And we can deal with work in less time.

I for one might fall asleep at my desk but for getting my blood boiling at DU, so I'll say it makes me more rather than less productive.

5. Why should we care...

...increased productivity only helps the CEOs earn more, not you.

6. And the moment somebody makes something new, the
big corporations buy it for pennies on the dollar; assuming that cozy middle-man agency that helps you submit patents and your ideas doesn't rip you off first. They're rather like the RIAA.

8. Nah.
I had a rain day today. I managed to get some laundry done and get some camping stuff together for this weekend.

The office jobs I had in the past wouldn't have allowed me to be here during work hours.

12. By doing free work?
We all write "for free" a very entertaining and informative collective,
and this competition for idea-space has brutally shaken up the world
news media, and even now the MSM are not clear on this eclipse,
as much as the dem dino's are still thinking clintonism redux II is
the solution to bushism redux II.

We do free work that is MOST valuable, transmitting high knowledge, and
threatening an insular and inept crony laden 4th estate. We are shining
a light on the very concept of productivity as a measure of slaves in their
machine, and since when did that take over our republic?

13. That's Exactly The Reason Why I Lurked A Year Before I Joined.
I knew if I signed up I'd be impulsive at work to post and it would affect my performance. My work ethic is too good to spend significant time online during working hours. I figured reading DU was one thing, but being able to post was another. Then all of a sudden one day the discussion forums wouldn't load, and an 'Access Denied' message came up instead. They upgraded our web filter so I knew I wouldn't be able to post anymore at work even if I had wanted to. That very night I came home and signed up, knowing there was no longer any risk to lost productivity at work. :)

(Still don't believe that was almost a year ago already!)
