A salute to Female Veterans
My wife served in the Navy and I entered her into the Women's Memorial in DC.

www.womensmemorial.org

Today, I got their newsletter and one quote caught my attention:

"LET THE GENERATIONS KNOW THAT THE WOMEN IN UNIFORM ALSO GUARANTEED THEIR FREEDOM." Anne S. Brehm who served in WWII as a member of the Army Nurse Corps.

Sometimes we forget to recognize or salute the "weaker" sex for their service on our behalf.

I served with an incredible large number of proud professionals in the Navy and a whole big bunch of em were Women.

Thanks Shipmates, and a big thanks to all Women in Uniform.

1. I only served with a couple of women.
The one I knew best was a first class yeoman, yeowomen, yeoperson. She was one of guys, a great friend, at an outfit of all chiefs and she ruled with an iron fist. Only the Master Chiefs, "The Three Wise Guys" who really ruled the roost, dared screw with Liz. Wherever you are today Liz, salute!

3. My best Leading Petty Officer
who worked for me was a female first class. Barely made the height requirements but could juggle work schedules of ten Sailors barely breaking a sweat and looked good doing it. I also had some working for me who were marginal at best but that wasn't exclusively female. And most likely the toughest service people I ever dealt with were female marines TAD to NAS Millington. Raunchy, nasty, foul mouthed sex machines just out of the field. Cussing Sailors could not hold a candle to those "young ladies."

14. Boss ... I didn't you were at Millington ....
I used to live in Bartlett.

We went to many an air show at Millington.

Do they still use lengths of anchor chain on the sides of the runway to imitate arresting gear?

23. I was never stationed there
but I was TAD there quite often. The base no longer has aviation squadrons but the Chief Of Naval Personnel is now HQ'd there, so the base is rather top brass heavy. I never was at an airshow there but they use the anchor chains for that purpose at NAS Belle Chaase near New Orleans. I plan to be at Millington in September for the CPO Promotion Ceremony.

Try the militarywoman.org site. It has a "searching for" forum. It's worth a shot.

22. I met my wife
at China Lake, a long, long time ago. An Air Traffic Controller at Key West. That even sounds romantic.

15. At least as moving as The Wall is this .....

The Women's Memorial that sits in a grove nearby to The Wall. Some years after The Wall went in, some people felt it needed more (it didn't then and it still doesn't, today) so they erected a statue and a flag pole near the west entrance to the depressed area. That is more or less a big nothing to me.

But the statue above is incredibly moving. The sculptor is Glenna Goodacre of Santa Fe(?). She's the best in the business.

My fondest recall of a woman in uniform is the jg I dated in Charleston while I was a worthless asswipe 2nd Class. Her carriage house apartment on Tradd ...... ahhhhh .... strains of Maggie Mae ...... :)

K&R

16. Absolutely. I Hate When I Hear Stupid Shit Like "Bring The Boys Home!"
Though I appreciate their sentiment and share it, I hate the fact that cliches like that still exist. Both men and women are putting it all on the line with their bravery and both should be given the world of respect.

17. I joined the Air Force in 1971 when I was 19.
It broke my dad's heart. Turned out I was unacceptable because
of an undiagnosed broken back some years before.

All in all, things worked out for the best. I probably wasn't cut
out for military life...but I had seen too many friends return
from from Viet Nam broken, and I had wanted to do my part.
