I've heard Mr. Gibson say he's sorry, and that he's wrong, and others say, well, he was drunk, he's got a disease, etc. But my question is, what is the root of this, Mel? I mean, we all say crazy things when we're drunk, and we've all undoubtedly had ugly moments when we're superstressed out and then drunk on top of it, I know I have - but what comes out at that moment isn't a tirade against the Jews. Yes, liquor releases demons, but I want to know why the demon in Mel Gibson is hatred of the Jews to begin with (I know, the father). Why, when Mels's id is released, its about the Jews fucking everything up, just like it was with Hitler. Except Mel Gibson, when his id is in check, I believe, really knows how wrong that is, and how stupid. He, I believe, at least fights with himself about this.

But he'll never win as long as he's so religious, because, I hate to tell you, the disease isn't alcholism, the disease is religion.

But that's another essay.

For now, let me just say again: the world has their simmering hatred of the Jews under check most of the time, but do watch them when they start weaving on PCH.

And Mel, let me remind you: The Jews have not started all the wars in the world. But they have greenlit all the movies.

8. Maher is on target. It is part of the human condition to

separate out into groups/clans/tribes/religions/castes. Humans are parochial by nature. It is the animal part of us seeking at once fulfilling a need for association and pecking order. What sets humans apart is that this instinct can be understood at an intellectual level and serve as a basis for instruction. This is also very human. Maher has made an astute observation about human nature that can be applied to all humans in all groups. It's just that Mel's association with his religious group gets in the way of rationality--just as many people's religious affiliations lead to strong biases. Maher is not a big fan of religion--and neither am I.

Your analysis perhaps says more about your bias than about Maher's statement.

What the hell happened to DU? Bill Maher is a COMEDIAN! He makes funnies! Often, the funnies are politically incorrect (like his show!), and I would imagine might make some feel "icky". It's like all the humor's been leeched out of DU recently... by some sort of... humor sucking vampire! 16. This is part of the problem. Those who 'don't get' anti-Semitism...

...simply do not have a CLUE how pervasive, mean, and downright evil it is. It's not socially condoned in America so it's generally not visible. Neither is child abuse socially condoned and I have a hard time coming to terms with how much more common THAT is than I would like to believe, in my safe, sane, rational mind.

A lot of us were raised to believe that people have a basis for good in themselves as well as a basis for evil, and that good is the 'default' mode for humanity. We were raised to believe that human dignity mattered, that it is inherent in all people regardless of color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, etc. We were indoctrinated that that is the 'default' belief of 'good people,' and thus all 'good people' strive to hold those beliefs, even if we struggle with prejudices against unfamiliar groups of people. We internalized a reality that doesn't allow bigotry, intolerance, cruelty, etc., to be permissible or morally defensible behavior, and thus assume that anyone who isn't overtly demonstrating such behavior shares our reality.

We're handicapped by that upbringing in the sense that it doesn't allow us to 'see' how normal hatred, intolerance, etc. are for a large number of our fellow-travellers on spaceship Earth. We don't 'get it' and we can't begin to imagine or cope with it. When we do encounter it, we go into a denial mode that says "well, there aren't really many people like this, it's just an aberration."

We cannot be strong and effective forces for good in the world until we overcome that blindness and denial, come to terms with the realities of moral ambiguity and the extent to which evil influences even 'decent' people (including OURSELVES) and devote a certain amount of energy to being mindful and overcoming it ourselves, and learning to deal effectively with it (beyond mere opposition,) in others.

Anti-semitism is one of the commonest forms of ugly bigotry in the world, including America. Unless and until we accept that and fight it on a realistic basis, we're just eye-rolling, finger-wagging, tut-tutting our way past the graveyard.

Sometimes, it's on the rise
and you'll hear some news telling of
the destruction of synagogues,
jewish cemetaries,
etc.

But even when it's quiet, anti-semitism exists.
It pervades almost
every civilised culture.

It's always been around, and it's not leaving.
