Is this Mel Gibson issue being blown out of proportion?
I ask because, I think back to Hurricane Katrina and Barbara Bush made the infamous -- "And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this
(she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them." -- statement. Now, as far as I know, she was completely sober and all her faculties were in place. Not to mention, she is married to one ex-president, and a mother to the current president. So, one would think that her etiquette would have been a lot better. How come this didn't get half as much attention as what Mel Gibson did.

3. In a word YES!
It is another diversion from what is really happening in the world today.
A drunk actor (big surprise there), got belligerent with and officer using ethnic slurs (another big surprise).
The only surprise should be that this thing has been the top headline on all the networks while women and children are being killed on the other side of the planet.

5. He's made what appears to be a sincere apology.
He is no doubt a bit of a nutcase, but I give him credit. Did Barbara Bush ever apologize, sincerely or otherwise?

When Mel decides to run for public office then all his dirty linen should be aired out for the public to see. Too bad there wasn't an equal outrage for Arnold, a person who lived in this country as an unauthorized alien worker and is a known sexual predator. The only reason he's not in jail is because any actions filed against him have been covered up with threats and pay offs.

11. Clogging up GD with too many darn Mel Gibson threads!
I deeply resent that far more worthy topics are continaully being shoved off the front page of GD to make room for yet another Mel Gibson thread. This thread simply contributes to the problem. At this point I'd suggest taking this topic to the Lounge, since GD is becoming more and more like "DU Lounge - the Sequel" every day.

Damn it, how many Mel Gibson threads do we need on the front page of GD, anyway? I don't give a flying squat what Jackie Mason thinks about Mel, what struggles he may have in rehab, etc. He's an asshole who doesn't deserve this kind of attention.

I'm going to go now and give a kick to my thread on hunger in America before another half dozen threads about pitbulls or Mel Gibson show up.

14. Gibson is the hero of the WWJD crowd that claims to have the in road
into this administration, Congress and, it hopes, to the Supreme Court.

His Passion movie grossed millions (perhaps billions) because it was shown in so many churches.

Thus, with this background it is not.

The irony, of course, is that this same crowd supports Israel's war as a step in the second coming and, at least for now, cannot afford to hate the Jews so much.

But, hey, let them resolve such a conflict.

15. No...
It's part of entertainment news and it doesn't seem to be anymore out of proportion that Jolie's baby, Nicole does SCOTUS, MJ's latest 'cat and mouse' game with elected state attornies, or some catfight between Lindsay *something* and some other young woman. (Both individuals I am assured are famous, important and sell a lot of ringtones, records, concerts, movies, mobility products, iPods, etc in the ads of newspapers)

The media companies are integrated and as such one arm of the corporation (news) is forced to promote the other arm of the corporation (entertainment).

This is partly why I stop bothering to buy a newspaper -- even the so-called quality papers have this shit in it and I could never understand this as people who are interested in 'Lindsay' whoever are not likely to buy the NYTimes or the Globe and Mail to get the '411' -- so all they have done is alienated actual newspaper readers, who are really not too interested in spending a dollar to find out about Brangelia or home improvement tips along with a sprinkling of news wire stories and op-eds piece that now show up allover the place in first seconds of any newspaper.

Mel is big news just like MJ or Arny as old Mel is a big player in Hollywood and is worth a hell of a lot to the industry -- his back catalogue alone is worth a small fortune that could be lost if Mel doesn't get a whipping like the one he gave Our Lord in his movie.

The media HAS to report on the flogging in order to save the investment.

20. Maybe Mel
Maybe Mel got drunk, like I did, on the Friday, over the images of the children being pulled out of the rubble in the house in Qana.

I didn't say anything about Jews, but I certainly let loose on Israel's actions around the local pundit drinking hole. And I drank more than usual.

His dad is a clear anti-Semite and drilled that stuff into his head as a kid.

Still, it's no real excuse. I'm just sayin'...

acceptance. PUBLIC.
If he despises any segment of his audience, why shouldn't they know it?
