KANSAS RESTORES SANITY TO STATE SCHOOL BOARD!!!
Board of Education’s balance is shifting
State panel’s conservative majority unlikely to retain sway as moderates make gains in the Kansas primary.
By DAVID KLEPPER and MELODEE HALL BLOBAUM
The Kansas City Star
TOPEKA | - Moderates were poised Tuesday to take back the reins of Kansas’ controversy-racked Board of Education. :woohoo:

Moderate challenger Sally Cauble was hanging on to a healthy lead early this morning against incumbent board member Connie Morris, a conservative, in far western Kansas. If Cauble wins, it means that moderates are virtually guaranteed to win back a 6-4 board majority.

“We won this vote by vote,” Cauble said. “It’s the voters who changed things.”

If Morris were to make a late comeback, the board likely would be deadlocked 5-5.

During the past two years, conservatives who now dominate the board have delighted supporters and enraged critics with their stances on the teaching of evolution, sex education and charter schools. The board oversees statewide education policy.

2. This is Kansas
Moderate Republicans are Democrats here. I know, it gets confusing. But moderates are okay. They are definitely MUCH BETTER for our state school board.

3. The Conservatives will be back. They never give up and
they never give in. They will just back off, change tactics and come at it again. Too bad Democrats don't have that kind of drive.

The conservatives suffered a big defeat in KS last night. If we can do it here in red state hell. it can be done anywhere.

Now we just have to fight the damn xtians in MO. Stem cells will be the big issue there in November.

23. The moderates are the key
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 11:45 AM by Mabus
There are a lot of moderate GOP'ers that are willing to cross lines and vote for Dems to help restore sanity. The big news is, they aren't just tired of the ID issue. They're pissed about a lot of stuff. Not only that, but increasingly, we are working with the disaffected GOP moderates to make a change. Mind you, we Dems aren't giving ground, rather they are having to join us on our terms. That's the biggest difference.

KANSAS CITY, Kan., July 29 — God and Charles Darwin are not on the primary ballot in Kansas on Tuesday, but once again a contentious schools election has religion and science at odds in a state that has restaged a three-quarter-century battle over the teaching of evolution.

***

Several moderate Republican candidates have vowed, if they lose Tuesday, to support the Democratic primary winners in November. With the campaign enlivened by a crowded field of 16 candidates contending for five seats — four held by conservatives who voted for the new science standards last year — a shift of two seats could overturn the current 6-to-4 majority. The four-year terms are staggered so that only half the 10-member board is up for election each two years.

The acrimony in the school board races is not limited to differences over the science curriculum but also over other ideologically charged issues like sex education, charter schools and education financing. Power on the board has shifted almost every election since 1998, with the current conservative majority taking hold in 2004.

18. They WILL try again.
This is already the second time they've tried to eliminate science, and then gotten voted out. These freaks won't stop. They don't care what the public thinks or wants.

21. They DO care!
They DO care what the public thinks and wants. Thats why they are trying so hard to turn this into a popularity contest. The freaks can't win in academia. They can't win in the labratory. So they try to win at the ballot box by persuading John Q. Public that science is atheistic (boooo hissss), and that their children will grow up to be Godless if they learn evolution in high school.

They certainly do care what the public thinks - that is their only way of getting this issue (Creationism/Intelligent Design) discussed.

Yes they will be back. That is why we can't wait a few years before we defend science again. We can't rest on these laurels, we must push forward and defeat religious ignorance (i.e the belief that you HAVE to chose between Science and God).

22. The conservatives are abandoning the GOP
McDonald, who lost against one of the incumbent wingnuts has vowed to help get the Dem candidate elected. He isn't the only one. You have to remember that Kansas is a a conversative state, in the old sense, and they are tired of what the GOP isn't doing for them. We've had a number of high-ranking party defections.

Yes, they won't give up, but their numbers are dwindling as people jump ship.

28. There are also all those repukes who have jumped ship and become Dems
Paul Morrison was at the watch party I went to last night. He is now a Dem. And you know what? He talked just like a Dem. Proof that a moderate Republican in Kansas is a Dem in any other state. And then there is the guy who was head of the repuke party in Kansas - he is now a Dem.

It is happening!! We need to spread this good news EVERYWHERE!!

29. It has these last two elections
But there is a movement statewide to avoid being the nation's laughing stock. Every single politician from KS whom I have heard speak in the last year has mentioned this. They are all tired of being part of Leno's monologue. So I think the momentum is there to kick the far right permanently to the curb.

We donned our pirate outfits and sacrificed a meatball. Then we did the secret "Pasta Dance". We danced and danced until we felt his noodly appendages. Then we collapsed on a soft bed of garlic bread. It worked.

High number of pirates means low probability of global warming. It's hot because we don't have enough pirates in Kansas. Do you suppose it has something to do with being landlocked?

Makes me want to check in on my previous district to see if they've managed to evict any of their conservative wackos off the school board.

School boards are popular places for budding politicians to get their start.

20. Kansas rejoins the 21st century!
And the best part is, we still have one more shot in November to take down two other imbeciles in the General Election. It won't be easy, but it is possible. If 6-4 pro-science majority sounds good, how about a 7-3, or dare I say 8-2 pro-science majority?

Defeating Connie "teen slut" Morris was a great coup!

Congrats to the people of Kansas. I'd like to thank the Kansas Citizens for Science (http://www.kcfs.org) for all their hard work.
