Is the U.S. imitating Israel, or is Israel imitating the U.S.?
Israel for 60 years has been living under a siege mentality, a small so called democracy surrounded by Arab and Muslim nations. All of the bombing and invading they do is justified as necessary to exist among enemies.
After 9-11 I heard a lot of pundits say that, "now we know how the Israelis must feel", and, "maybe we'd better follow Israel's example and prepare to live as if under constant attack".
And after 9-11, the right wing war party in the U.S. got everything it ever dreamed of, the right to attack Arab and Muslim nations with impunity.
Their are many similarities in the way the U.S. and Israel operate, and both proudly claim to be democracies, and both proudly claim to be believers in the God of Abraham.
Both claim they want peace, but they were attacked, so they must make war, and both sides claim to be sorry when "collateral damage" occurs.
Both nations have superior weaponry and are not afraid to use it, both claim that a nation has the right to exist and defend itself. Both nations are exclusively at war with Muslim nations only.
After 9-11 we all got a lesson in how to live while under siege, "do as the Israelis do, go shopping, live your life, but be prepared to get hit by the "enemy" and prepared to retaliate times ten.
Our two nations openly torture and imprison people without trials, bomb hospitals and wedding parties and express sorrow that innocents got whacked but, that's war for you.
So when I rag on Israel, I have to admit that "we do it too", in fact, we've been doing it for a lot longer than they have.
