What would happen if Israel was hit by a nuke??
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 03:38 PM by kentuck
What do you think would happen? Would they strike back at Hamas? at Hezbollah? At the PLO? At Iran? What would they do? What would we do? What would you do? Is that not the possible direction we are going? Or would the US strike back at the country that was responsible? I know it's not something anyone wants to think about but if we're going to continue cheerleading the war the Middle East, then there is always that possibility. We should call for a ceasefire before matters get worse....much worse.

1. Seeing as Israel is the only country in the ME with nukes...
I think the answer's pretty obvious. If they got nuked, they'd nuke back.

4. Nuke back at whom? You just said they are the ONLY ones with nukes
who to strike back at? I am sure they would know the origins...who the hell would do that? China? Russia? France? Pakistan...perhaps??

That seems absolutely right.
Anyone they feel like blaming it on.

I hope nobody ever uses a nuke ever again. What we did in Japan should never be repeated. This conventional massacre is horrible. The idea of nukes just makes it absolutely religious in scope.

5. Depends what got hit and if the national government survived
In which case, expect a fair amount of retribution in kind, esp if it was traceable to Iran.

11. The "unthinkable"
The oil spill will wreck the place before it's contained. I don't think anywhere in the world, is ready for a disaster like a nuclear exchange, on even a small scale! Look at us...we couldn't handle a storm.

13. In your scenario, who fired the nuke?
A nation, or a subnational terrorist organization?

If it were the former, Israel wouldn't think twice about wiping that country clean off the map. They might opt for a massive, unrelenting air assault with conventional weapons instead of retaliating with nukes, but whatever the outcome, there wouldn't be a living thing left standing.

Now, if it were the latter? Hell, I have no idea. What could they do? You can't "nuke" Hamas. You can't "nuke" Hezbollah. Hell, they're having a miserable time as it is targeting Hezbollah with conventional weapons. Nukes aren't going be MORE accurate.

17. Somebody could be furnished the nuke by the mad Pakistani, Dr. Khan...
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 03:51 PM by kentuck
It could be Iran or some group in Iraq. Or it could be one of the renegade Russian nukes that are unaccounted for? If it is unthinkable, then perhaps someone should think about it for a moment?

15. if that happened I'm pretty sure who Wouldn't do that...
and that would be Iran or Syria - same reason I never believed Saddam would launch (if he had) - it would be instant suicide.

but I think who just might - for the obvious reasons.

yes, it is that crazy.

16. The question is who nuked Israel if your scenario is true
Who does the nuking? Your question is open ended to the point of being silly. I could say the Russians did the nuking.

If the Russians did the nuking, there probably isn't anything Israel could do because they'd be out of range of Israeli missiles and warplanes, and there likely wouldn't be an Israeli alive after getting a dose of Russia's stockpile, and the Russians would probably nuke locations where they believe Israel stores its nukes first before nuking everything else.

18. It's an entirely plausible scenario-
And the US will use it as the catalyst to unleash hell on Iran.
As a matter of fact, I think that is the plan, PNAC style, naturally.

20. Yeah, but not this one...
:) If we're going to cheerlead war, then we have to expect the worse. We can't say, no, it would never happen. It could happen. War is unpredictable.

23. Israel is a very small country
and even a very small nuke would be devastating. Hundreds of thousands if not millions would die- Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs and Palestinians. That's what would happen.

27. Seymour Hersh wrote a book called The Samson Option
15 years ago. Hersh speculated a nuclear attack on Israel would result in a massive retaliatory strike against the nation or nations responsible. Possibly even any countries that assisted these nations in acquiring nuclear technology.

I believe the Israelis have subs capable of launching nuclear tipped missiles.

29. They nuke back at multiple targets
Including, but not limited to: Tehran. Damascus. Riyadh. Beirut. Basically, every major Arab city in the Middle East. If it came to nukes, and the rest of the Arab world didn't IMMEDIATELY and unequivocally condemn whoever fired the first one, Israel would just say fuck 'em all and nuke every Arab nation in the whole sector. Every capital, every major city.

And the rest of the world would blow up right along with them.
